Big summer

Created by: Big_Papa20
Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 1, 2024
Published: Apr. 1, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Montreal has some good pieces in their system already (Suzuki, Slafkovsky, Caufeild, Dach, Newhook, Guhle, Reinbacher, Hutson, and Xhekaj) that I think have a long term future here. But the 2 glaring needs in my opinion are 2 top 6 forwards. They should have an opportunity to acquire at least one via the draft this offseason and I think based off their recent drafts that Lindstrom will be their guy, and could form a nice 1/2 punch with Suzuki up the middle. If Carolina looks to keep Guentzel given the success him and Jarvis had together and having only 3 defenders signed past this season on the active roster then they likely have to part ways with Necas. If he is available Montreal should be all over it, he fits their timeline perfectly and adding him and a full season of Dach could push them into the playoff picture. This may not be enough for Carolina to accept but they should throw in more prospects etc if it comes to it, he would be a fantastic add for this team and give them something like the following long term.

Slafkovsky-Suzuki-Dach
Caufeild-Lindstrom-Necas
Newhook-Beck-Roy
Heineman-Kapenen-Mesar
Gallagher, Anderson.

Hutson-Reinbacher
Matheson-Guhle
Xhekaj-Mailloux
Engstrom.

Fowler/Primeau/Montembault.

I really think that is a team that could compete consistently and do some damage come playoff time if the young guys keep trending in the right direction, and the team can overcome the never ending injury bug. But it’s safe to say this summer is critical for Montreals rebuild.

*It will take more for Necas then shown, but he is a way better target then Zegras in my opinion.

This is definitely not enough for Necas
It should start AT LEAST with Mike Matheson + WPG 1st round pick IF Carolina doesn't plan on extending Brady Skjei ... even then Nikishin has another year in Russia and then he would jump right away on the top 4 with Slavin extension

Canes decline. Harris is of no interest, and 2 late firsts ain't getting a 70 point producer who also happens to be the fastest player in the league

I just don't see Necas being a good fit for a trade to MTL.

He is likely worth a lot, probably worth at the very least the 9th OA pick. Canes and MTL will not find a deal to make it work.

laugh Harris and futures aren't getting you Necas.

Detroit will give you Rasmussen+Veleno for Reinbacher and Slafkovsky that's how poor that trade is.

Montreal's young core gives me the feeling that they're peaking as a bubble playoff team. That blueline looks pretty weak, and is there a single guy in their top six outside of suzuki that doesn't have question marks? Even Suzuki isn't exactly elite. very good hockey player, but I just think this team needs a whole lot more, and they didn't get it when they were truly bottoming out.

Necas has reached 70 points (or been on pace for 70 points over a goal 82 game season) once in a six year career. Stick to facts; he’s on pace for 57 points this year which is right in line with his career ave to date; hardly elite.

SJ passes on the corpse of Dvorak. Not enough to take on 4.4M

Okay, call him a 60 point producer, this still ain't getting him when it comes with 8 years of cost certainty. Not to mention, Necas plays in CAROLINA! Rod's system notoriously kills offensive talents. It's why Aho straight up deserves the Hart for his 90 point season this year. 60 points in Carolina is the equivalent of 80 elsewhere. Look at how the Canes big contributors of years past do elsewhere. Niederreiter in Winnipeg, Trocheck in New York... they explode offensively because it's not so strangling. Necas will too, probably more than the other two

I have no dog in this fight so can’t comment on trade value; seems fair to me but 🤷🏻. Everyone’s opinion is valid but I think we (all) should stick to facts. Props for admitting you misspoke when calling Necas a 70 point producer

He tends to score at a 65-70 point pace. I was being a little more generous, I tend to do that, but he also has a tendency to STINK in contract years. Orlov concussed him in January, and since returning, he's scoring at more than a pint a game. I kind of expected him to get closer to the 70 point mark than he has since returning

How much more would you think makes it a fair offer? Don’t think this was enough as I noted in the description!

The issue here isn't going to be value. Probably Barron, both 1sts would be more than enough. But the Canes are in the middle of their cup window. They'd need a scoring forward back, which means one of Slafkovsky, Suzuki or Caufield. Necas could be added to for Suzuki, but it's going to be a player like that if Carolina are parting with a top someone like him at his age with that kind of control.
