Fixing the issues from an outside perspective

Created by: Rob32sjsharks
Team: 2023-24 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 10, 2023
Published: Nov. 10, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Not an Oilers fan but these have to be considered reasonable, Boston could use a 1C and have the luxury of 2 top tier goalies, Columbus Johnson and Boqvist are on the outs and getting a 1st plus a LD prospect to take on Ceci seems fair.
San Jose can stomach the Campbell deal if they get a return worth considering like the one I posted.
RNH is a huge loss but is softened a little with Duclair and Johnson.
The D should be improved with Boqvist and Benning and Goaltending is a gigantic upgrade.

Is this enough to turn things around?

Late to the party.

Ully/RNH has been done to death.

Oilers fans think they should get a 1st line center type return based off 1 year.

Boston fans think Vezina trophy winner more valuable than 2nd line wing.

Not going to find much common ground.

Both have so much trade protection that the odds of being able to do it are slim.

Jackets easily decline. Kent Johnson isn’t being traded unless it’s for a top 6 upgrade

Huberdeau, RNH and EK65.

Who are 3 recent Nhl players are had one great season, scoring 100+ points, but will never get close to total ever again ?

I think W. Nylander may get added into that category too.

Pretty sure Nugent-Hopkins has played more LW the past years and he's definitely not a 1C.

I said 1st line not top 6.

He’s had 1 season that he hit 70+ points. Only 3 out of 12 over 56.

He’s also much better at LW.

So yes my statement is true. 🤷🏻‍♂️. Not giving a return as if he’s a 100 point center. Because he isn’t.

Fair points I’m not following either team as much so figures I’m late to the game!

Nylander has produced well for years he’s not in that category, and I see RNH as a top 6 C on 90% of NHL teams, oilers are the rare exception with 2 elite 1C on the same team.
And 70-85 points from a top 6 C is still very very good

When you have the 1-2 C position stacked with all world talent you get pushed to wing to stay in the top 6! Silly to have a 75-100 point guy as your 3C! He is a top 6 C on 30 of the 32 teams in the leauge and a 1C on like 12-15 of them

The rumors are flatout wrong, but why would anyone actually listen to the team sources?

I'm not saying he's a 3C but I wouldn't want him as a 1C unless I've got a middling team. He's good top6 player, sure. He isn't a regular 75-100 pts guy. I would just not have him as my 1C if the goal is the Cup (which in this case, would be).

Most likely in Boston he is on LW with Zacha/Pasta.

Slight chance they’d alleviate pressure on Potsy and move him to wing, making a Marchy/RNH/Potsy line. Doubt it though.

He’s not pushing Zacha or Coyle out of center roles with that career 44% faceoff though. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Is RNH better than every C on Boston? I don’t think anyone can argue that! Plus he is being paid like a ln average to below average 2C! I personally would love RNH and his contract on my team.

44% isn’t horrible but it’s something I would work on with him, but right now he’s not needed to be a face off guy so it’s not worth working a lot on.
You also have to take into consideration he’s usually the 2nd guy in after Draisatl or McDavid is tossed and he’s not able to cheat a little or try things because he risks a penalty called on him (if 2nd guy gets tossed it’s a delay of game penalty)

He’s been bad his entire career at it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

From a logistics standpoint.

Why it works:

Edm needs a goalie and adding a mediocre one won’t help much.

Boston needs another top 6 FW.

Cap neutral move.

Why it does not work:

Edmonton collectively is bad defensively, goalie will help but not enough.

Trading RNH for a goalie is not a good move.

Boston is better off having two top 10 goalies that give them a chance to win every night as opposed to playing a backup caliber goalie 25-30 times a year. They have a mid to good offense that is better off playing lower scoring games. They are better off holding Ullmark and adding a cheap mid 6 wing like Vrana or Duclair. Unless they are moving Ullmark to make room for a difference maker they are better off waiting til the offseason. RNH is a very nice complimentary piece. But he’s not the missing piece, and with early arrival of Poitras their need for 2nd line caliber center just does not exist anymore.

Jackets aren’t looking to trade Johnson. Johnson himself, the prez and the coach have all stated this was best for his confidence and he is still a major part of the future. “Trade rumors” have been pushed out of western Canada as an effort to stir up clicks as the young promising Vancouver kid has been demoted after a great rookie season.

Now I won’t sit here and say he will never be traded or things won’t change but as of right now we have maybe a 5 percent chance of that happening.
