yeah. cambell trade was fine admittedly as he gave us 2 solid seasons of goaltending, but it'd be so nice to have moore and o'reilly in the bottom 6 rn. i dont even know what we can do about the reaves contract, it seems like an unmitigated disaster. stings even more given lafferty's production in van rn.
To me Dubas was one of the best GM's in the League and he's just been very unlucky. His Plan to sign core star players to big contract and then build around them with cheap pieces and great pro-scouting (which he had), was the model in my mind for the best way to build a team. We were happy to steal some of his homework.
Look at the Canucks they've got their core 4 (Demko, Hughes, Petey and Miller) plus some other good pieces Boeser, Kuz, and Hronek. Now they have good pro-scouting and coaching. They're filling in around their core pieces, and they look great.
Honestly, two things screwed Dubas, his inability to find great goaltending and Covid. His whole plan was clearly predicated on locking those pieces up for a window and using the space as the cap grew to make the team better and better. Covid was completely unforeseeable, and if it hadn't come, I think the Leafs would have, if not won a cup, been a lot closer than they got.
