Description
The puns are getting difficult.

With Lumbus's recent moves, it might be more appealing for Kuzy to agree to a trade there with a revamped defense and centering Gaudreau and Laine. The Blue Jackets certainly seem to be in a buying and competing mood.

That’s a trade Columbus probably considers, imo I’d like to see some protection on the pick, but with the recent moves I’m guessing jarmo would at least consider the trade.

If the first is top 10 protected I think they definitely consider. Maybe throw in roslovic instead of the third

I think the Caps would be OK with the protection but would prefer the pick over Roslovic (unless Backstrom retires, in which case I think that'd be a great swap).

CBJ trade is fine, though $2.3M is a lot of retention, so Caps might want a 2nd instead of a 3rd.

ARI trade is fine I guess.

COL trade is bad. At most it would be Fehervary straight up for Girard, no addition picks. Marty is younger and cheaper, that makes up for Girard's better offense.

VAN is fine.

If COL would make that trade straight up without the picks, holy schnikes would I jump on that. But I think you're overvaluing Marty and undervaluing Girard. Girard clocks in as an elite #2D in terms of points and ice time, while being one of the least penalized defensemen over the last five seasons. He's only 17 months older than Fehervary, so I don't think the age is a detriment - if anything, you're trading for a guy playing in his prime on an undervalued contract with significant term.

Guess it depends who values what more. Marty is a high end shut down guy with no offense, while Girard is high end offense guy with defense game lol

Do Roslovic instead of the third and don't acquire Garland and we're good imo.

Also would rather just hold onto Fehervary since he's cheaper. Gives us more cap flexibility.

Avs say no thanks at this time. I think they will move Manson before Girard and that is only if it's holding up a reasonable Toews extention.

That's actually a great point re: Roslovic vs. Garland. Absolutely the right call - gonna make that change based on your and others' suggestions.

I'm frankly just not a believer in Fehervary. Puts me at odds with a lot of folks, but to my core I believe the Caps are best served moving him out ASAP for a proven guy, and if Girard is available I can't think of a better grab to make for the contract value.

Makes sense. I actually just posted an ACGM based off of what you did here and my suggestions if you wanna take a look at that.

I love Fehervary, he's one of my favorite players, so I'm very biased and don't wanna move him lol.

The problem is that Girard and Sandin are both undersized, offense-first defensemen, and with Fehervary gone one of them is gonna have to take over his role as a shutdown guy. Girard's just not a good fit for the Caps. I'm ok with moving Fehervary, but his replacement's got to be someone who can handle the tough minutes.

You're probably right - just keeping seeing Girard pop up in rumors the last two years, and he's fairly high on The Athletic's trade board. I think the Avs would be dumb as hell to trade him.

Is that a problem? Every other defensemen on the Caps is the same size as Fehervary. Over the last five seasons, of the 201 defensemen who have played as many games as Marty, Girard and Sandin are top-30 in SAT%, and over 50% in all situations. MF is bottom-50 in SAT% (48.1%), bottom-30 relative to his teammates (-3.3), and worst among all Caps defensemen over that timeframe (including Matt Irwin). On a team getting older and losing offensive firepower, having two young defensemen that contribute to offense at top-pairing rates sounds pretty luxurious.

Disagree on the fit because the caps are uber slow and Girard would help them pick up the pace, especially breaking out of their own zone. And he's actually been a lot better defensively since getting a longer stick at the new year.

I would guess that has a lot to do with Fehervary playing tougher minutes on a shutdown pairing, which makes it a lot harder to generate offense. Advanced stats like that aren't very useful for comparing defensemen because they have such defined roles, and the type of minutes they get has a huge effect on their numbers.

The Caps as a whole may be slow, but Fehervary's one of the fastest skaters in the league. This trade would actually make them slower, although Girard would definitely improve their breakouts.

first cbj trade -- like it a lot, makes sense for both sides
az trade -- great
fehervary/girard swap -- I definitely think that girard is undervalued and fehervary is a bit overvalued by caps fans, but the contract difference still makes me pretty hesitant on it
roslovic -- huge huge pass, literally kuzy but with half as much skill

generally, I feel like with the ~2m saved without the fehervary/girard swap and the 4m saved without bringing in roslovic, you could add a much better top 6 winger for cheap (like Boeser, for example)
