So McBain wants to play this year and the implication is that Guerin isn't going to trade his rights this season if he doesn't get what he wants (a 2nd round pick reportedly). Guerin is (seems?) fine letting him walk this offseason, but since McBain wants to play he and his agent are likely going to try to find a team that's willing to pay Guerin's asking price.

Therefore, you either give up a 2nd for him to add to your team this year, or you sign him in the offseason. I don't think Guerin is going to budge on his asking price

From what I've gathered, he is a prima-donna that only wants to sign somewhere that is going to give him a top 6 opportunity.

He's big. Big means good in many GMs' eyes. Also 24 teams have called on him which makes his price higher

Which, he could absolutely be worth it. Pair him with a couple skilled players in a top 6 role and it is possible that he could be successful right off the bat. But, the fact remains, he hasn't really paid his dues and is asking a lot.

That is kind of ridiculous though, isn't it? Why would a team pay to acquire him when they can just sign him in a couple of months? Montreal is in the same situation with Harris, we need to figure out a way to sign him, cause once Aug 15th comes we lose him and wasted a good pick. TBH if I am a GM of any team I would steer clear of any prospect who commits to the NCAA. IF I did select one in the draft and tried to sign them in the first 2 off season and was turned down, I would trade their right to hopefully get a pick back. The NHL really has to fix these types of loopholes.

Because he has zero interest in waiting till August. team with his right like Minnesota can be the only one to trade his right so he can burn a year.

Maybe a team really wants him, but doesn’t feel good about their chances to actually land him when he’s UFA.

Kinda naive for every interested GM to assume they’ll actually be the one to sign him, yeah?

I mean, sort of for some teams, but not really? You have to look at him as a "rental" that you acquire for this year and have long-term. Montreal is a team that doesn't make sense to give up picks for him since they aren't in the playoff race. But for teams that need center depth and are in the playoff picture (Oilers maybe, Jets maybe, Canucks, Bruins if they think he's an upgrade, Caps, etc.), it makes sense to use a 2nd on a young center if they feel he's an upgrade and they get to keep for pretty cheap longer-term.

I'm just repeating what the reported asking price is: a 2nd round pick. I don't know if he'll get that (and if he doesn't then all indications are that Guerin is going to make McBain wait to play until next season by not trading him), but that's what Guerin is asking for and to this point Guerin has proven he is not going to make a trade just to make a trade so I have no reason to believe he's going to budge on that ask. You may have a different opinion, but that's mine.

I think his skilled gets overlooked due to his size. He has a soft touch.

Four years at Boston College working his way up lineup isn't paying dues? 4C, 3C, 2C, 1C (not that linear of a route, but close).

Simply, no. He is not a sure thing to be a top 6 center at the NHL level, and that is what he is asking for.

The fix needs to come on CHL side though. Rules have been way too tilted in CHL favor for far too long.

Who said he was "a sure thing to be a top-6 center at NHL level"? I know I didn't.

I agree a 2nd round pick is high. But that is clearly an opening price. He probably gets used as trade chip for rental anyway.

Supposedly, that is what McBain is asking for. He wants to sign somewhere that is going to play him in a top 6 role right away. And MIN can't give him that, so he is holding out on signing. And they are setting his price too high even though they don't care if he walks in the offseason.

He is not asking for a top-6 role. He is in conference playoffs now. He isn't talking about this.

What he has done - telling Wild GM before deadline - was a courtesy to his drafting team. He has every right to not sign. He doesn't have to tell his team anything in March. But he did it so that Minnesota could use him in trade (they could have traded him after deadline but only picks and rights can be moved then).

I wasn't just talking about the NCAA FA, rules the LTIR rules also need to be fixed, we need stiffer deterrents for players going out intending to injure other players. We need a better and consistent understanding of what is goalie interference. There are a whole whack of rules that need to be redefined for todays game.

Just read something from the Athletic talking about the situation. Said nothing about top 6. But it essentially does say that he wants to sign with a team that is willing to burn the first year of his ELC and the Wild are no longer willing to do that. He certainly is within his rights to do so, otherwise it wouldn't be an option. Doesn't change the fact that the Wild are asking too much for him and he doesn't seem like the caliber of player that should expect to step right into the NHL and burn the first year of his ELC.

Telling the Wild GM he is not signing.

He could wait until the summer. There is no reason to say anything now other than NHL trade deadline.

If he wants to burn the first year, we're the only team can do that unless we trade him before the deadline since nobody's reasonably going to give up assets for him after the deadline. Clearly he wants to burn the first year of his ELC and get some more money on an SPC quicker. Seems like a pretty solid reason to communicate with Guerin.

Just to clarify, you can trade players after the deadline, they just can't be used in the playoffs. It rarely matters, but can be important.
If Vegas for example, has everyone healthy before the playoffs and are over the cap, they can trade a player to a non-playoff team. A playoff team wouldn't be interested as they couldn't use that player.
