TBH Kulak and Dermott are very similar players. So whatever you would pay to acquire Kulak is likely what you would pay for Dermott.

Except Dermott is younger, has a better contract and is under 3 years of term opposed to a rental. Trying to call them a comparable price would be dumb.

We aren't talking about a 22 yo vs a 28 yo we are talking about a 25 vs 28 yo. 3 years difference in age, similar numbers throughout the entire careers, sure you get 2 years for team control but that isn't worth much. Both their career highs are 17 points, not exactly worth writing home about. They have both hit their ceilings and are both decent depth D men but not much more than that. They also have similar contracts (except Kulak's ends this season) so if Kulak is worth a 4th Dermott gets a 3rd, if Kulak gets a 5th Dermott gets a 4th. Like I said similar value.

You might be the only person who will try and tell someone that team control isn't worth much. Its simply a completely undefendable statement when you look at what brings value in trades.

I didn't say it didn't have value, if you were talking about a 22 yo vs a 28 yo then sure it carries much more value but at 25 those 2 years of team control only bumps his value up slightly. I know you don't want to hear this since you are a Leafs fan but truth of the matter is his value is only slightly more than Kulak

2 years of term isn't slight value. You'd have a hard time finding trades made to confirm that view.

Jokes aside, I dont think we are looking to moveDermott. Young, local guy that plays both sides. Hes getting more physical and hes underratedly strong. If we were looking to move him, maybe a 3rd or a 4th?

yea was thinking about that
he still has potential i think, but wont live up to it in Toronto as he isn't getting the playing time. Has more opportunity in van

I'd probably expect a 2nd for him. I look at Zadorov's trade to Calgary in the offseason as a comparable. A young 3rd pairing defenseman who fetched a 3rd round pick. Dermott is younger, on a better contract and has at the very least 2 seasons term remaining in the coming offseason so it elevates to a 2nd.

4th at most

Show me your comparables for a young defenseman, with 3 years term and a positive on ice impact going for a 4th. Like Campabee pointed out above, Kulak and Dermott are much the same player. Only Dermott has more time to get beter and is under team control while doing it. You might get a rental on Kulak for a 4th but 3 years of Dermott is going to cost you a 2nd.

For a 4th round pick you get 1 year of guys like Kurtis MacDermid (Seattle to Colorado trade), a rental on Patrik Nemeth (Detroit to Colorado at last seasons deadline)

in no world are leafs going to get a 2nd for dermott
3rd at most
like I said he has an upside, but it is not going to be reached on the leafs as he is not getting the playtime

and again I say show me the comparables. I think your value of what a 3rd or 4th round pick is whats off. I've shown you what kind of defensemen and term you get for a 4th round pick.

And you aren't even considering what you are saying. He has an upside he's not going to reach on the Leafs ... thats what you are trading for. Thats what trading for term is with an RFA and where you find its value.

Right now he isnt worth more than a 3rd.
Zadarov was traded for a 3rd. One of your comparables

With 1 year left on his term. For more than twice the amount of team control, 2 and a half years of term on Dermott, you get to pay 1 round lower. Thats a good comparable for you.

Dermott's not going to be traded to start with. I'm confident he'd get a 2nd if he was though.
