Holtby for Gostisbehere

Created by: hockeybadger
Team: 2020-21 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 1, 2021
Published: Apr. 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Reasoning can be found in trade.
Trades
VAN
  1. Gostisbehere, Shayne
Additional Details:
The Flyers get a solid back up goaltender with the veteran experience that can help Hart for the next two years. Apparently this is the type of mold that Philly is looking for in a veteran goalie. They also get out of the last year of Gost's contract.
PHI
  1. Holtby, Braden
Additional Details:
Canucks re-allocate money from their goaltending into their defense, while opening up a spot for DiPietro to start getting reps in for next season. Gostisbehere's contract also fits the Canucks 2021-22 window.

I definitely think the Flyers might think about a move like this with the struggles of Hart and that Hotlby and Hart know each other

Not sure this makes sense for Vancouver, ghost isn’t the type of defense they need.

Makes a lot of sense on paper. I don't think Ghost helps us much but neither is Holtby in a pure backup role.

I'd rather have Holtby his deal expires earlier

What does Van do for their Seattle goalie exposure requirement if they did this trade?

Logically I think it makes sense with the Vancouver losing Edler and Benn this off-season and Philly can't ever seem to find a goalie. But as dumb as it sounds, the way it is here I don't think Vancouver is smart to add on anymore cap when they still need to sign Hughes and Pettersson. $200K isn't much but it's still putting them closer to the cap when they can't afford to. If Philly retains some cap, maybe it gets more traction but as is I can't see Vancouver doing it.

Well there's three avenues they could go down:

1. Make this deal after the expansion draft, as neither player expires this year.
2. Trade with a team that has an extra goalie that fits exposure rules (e.x. Callum Booth in BOS, Helvig in CAR, Delia in CHI, Miska/Johansson in COL, etc)
3. Sign a free agent goalie to a deal that ends after the 2021-22 season

I think Option 2 would work the best since there are a lot of available and it wouldn't cost more than a depth player in return or a conditional pick.

Edler will re-sign for cheap or retire. they have enough LHD depth in the organization. Also Ghost is not the type of dmen they should be looking for.
