Playoff team? Yes. Cup Contender? Not likely. Rebuild on the fly? absoluely

Created by: drummerdao
Team: 2016-17 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: May 24, 2016

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Scoring depth? Check.
Grind Line? Check.
Puck moving back end? Check.
Solid Goaltending? Check.
PP/PK? Check.
Youth and Speed? Check.
Veteran leadership? Check.
Long term outlook? Good.

Originally, I was trading Jurco, Campbell, Sproul and picks for Andersen, but I changed it to move Nyquist and add Eriksson.

The questionable area again is the defense, but that's solely on the knee of Kronwall. By having Wisniewski, he and Kronwall can stay fresh by rotating games. Then when the playoffs hit, unless Jensen is red hot, you play the veterans.

The 3rd line is the grind line of Abdelkader, Sheahan, Glendening. They're tasked with being pests and shutting down a top 2 line of the opponent.

The 4th line is a speed line. They'll only get 10-11 minutes a night, but with lots of offensive zone starts, they'll get plenty of chances.

This team wouldn't touch the playoffs and that Andersen trade is laughable, maybe switch Tatar and Jurco.

I disagree with the andsersen trade. Goalies hold little value right now

With the way you have bought out Datsyuk, does that still count against the cap?

Can you just buyout Datsyuk's contract?

You can't buy out a 35+ contract. The cap stays on the books in full

With the buyout, his cap hit stays on the books completely, hence the $7,500,000 after his name (that's the cap hit of the buyout).

I changed it a bit. Maybe adding Nyquist will change your mind on the trade and adding Eriksson will change your mind on the playoffs. I actually like this team even more now and feel rather than a 7th/8th seed, they could push for a 5th/6th seed in the East.

Is Detroit riding goaltending into the playoffs? This team would easily get swept in the season series with Toronto. You have 4 of 6 Dman who combined have less than 500 career NHL games (half of those belong to Brendan Smith). I hope your D is random here and you don't really think Smith and Marchenko can anchor the first line. Smith has 4 good games a year and if your telling Marchenko he is going to be one of your top 2 defenseman, he's not taking $1M (pay cut from 2015). You have $1M left in CAP, your D looks like the Detroit Tiger Bullpen. Your second forward line is 2 guys with 135 games experienced, anchored by a guy who is running on empty. You took a guy that was just given $4M a year to be a top 6 forward and asked him to be a shut down player now. Your 4th line is awesome, total experience of 37 NHL games. This team would be lucky to score 150 goals in a season. You don't have scoring depth, Your PP/PK are horrible (abdelkader at the point? for what?). Jensen, Smith and Nordstrom on PP2? You have offensive minded defensemen killing powerplays. Your not making the playoffs with an offense that has 8/12 guys with very limited experience and your defense is 3/7 inexperienced. Smith is always a question when he plays, Kronwall is going to crawl through the year and Green has played 70+ games in 6 of his 11 NHL seasons (Injury prone). Don't even get me started on how many goals players had last season that left (90+) and how many goals your filling their places with (60). This team wins maybe 25 games.

I agree with all of this. This is not the right moves for them at all

This lineup needs Vanek. 5th round pick and he's yours. =)
