Description

I know that this is very unlikely to happen during the season, but the sooner it happens, the better. The biggest thing here is whether or not the Wings would trade Tatar right after signing him long term, but it's not like this team is going to be competitive while Tatar is still there.

A big reason for doing this is because it frees up a lot of cap space so they can resign Larkin, Mantha and Athanasiou this offseason, as well as just giving them some wiggle room for the next few seasons. It also really gives them a lot of high draft picks, which would essentially make their farm system one of the best in the league in an instant. Whether they get Dahlin or not shouldn't matter. Three first round picks should give you some real high end talent.

You can trade up to two guys with retained salary max. Trades look good, though mrazek isn't worth a second.

I won't paste the full limitations on Retained Salary Transactions (you can check them in the CBA in 50.5 (e) (iii) (C) if you want to read legalese), but they boil down to:
You can keep up to 50% of the cap and salary commitment to a player you trade.
You can only have such commitments to three players at any given time. (e.g. Toronto currently has that with Ben Scrivens, Matthew Lombardi, and Matt Frattin. Doubt Detroit could afford to deal both Tatar and Nyquist seeing that we only have Svechnikov possibly in the top 6 the rest are 3rd and 4th line scrubs in Grand Rapids and zero chance that Holland would ever retain on 3 players in a single season.
