How do you send a rental+an unwanted contract for a two young players (one with elite potential) and also get picks on top?

You do realize that Car traded DeAngelo and are willing to let Bear go since they don't think they are worth signing just like Hamilton and Faulk before them. So why would they take tanner pearson or even JT Miller.

Carolina has a bunch of UFAs that are walking away from their middle six. There have been trade rumours linked between the Canucks and Hurricanes involving Miller and Necas. The Canucks have also been in contact and have an interest in Bear. With this move, both teams fill needs, and although it is an expensive price for Miller, that is roughly the market value.

CAR also has guys ready for a role on the team from the AHL which is why they’re comfortable letting guys go and not overpaying. And it’s not their philosophy to sign somebody like JT long term.
