The question I keep asking but don’t get any real answer.
If Kakko is taking a 2m ish contract, why are we moving him for anything but a forward who’s better than him at 2m- ish. We have forward prospects, who are closer than a 23rd overall pick. We’re competing and he’s great value at 2m and change.

I think drury values mobile defenseman more than someone like lindgren on a top pairing.

Actually that seems fair value, I might consider using Pelletier and the rangers first to either move way up, or flip for another defenseman.
Our forward group doesn't really lose anyone aside from Kakko as an RFA, and I dont see him needing a huge contract.

With Chytil Returning
Im not sure we stick with Lindgren. I can easily see the rangers moving him for value and finding a better long term fit for LD.
He's played poorly and that contract looks like it would age very very poorly.
Also I'd rather give Kakko 5x5, since 3 years immediately into UFA and the cap hit isn't that much different. Especially if we're moving lindgren.
Also flip cuylle and vesey.
Cuylle is gonna be in the middle 6 at least.

Kakko just hasn't played well enough to be worth all that.
I put his value at about a 3rd. Which is about the value of acciari</div></div>
He’s 23 years old, he’s a high end defensive forward, who’s had a bad year but a career high of 40 pts with only 14m per game.
The rangers
1. Aren’t moving him in the division without a massive overpay.
2. Aren’t moving him for a 31 year old winger who provides less than he does.

Not even that. If kakko signs that contract why would we move him? That’s a great short term bridge.

Usually in those scenarios it’s that a player who’s signed long term, has settled into a community. Being forced to relocate against their will violates the spirit of that agreement, and the trust is lost.
It happened when Atlanta went to wpg, it took years to clear all the trade requests.

He's still out performing Laf while playing the same top line minutes. It's also funny because you would actually think it makes it harder for Slaf on a crap team because teams only have one line to focus their best defensive players against.
All in all, our player is younger, playing better and has a higher ceiling. Ranger add for all those reasons</div></div>
Lets compare age relative seasons.
D+2
Laf 79 games played
19 even strength goals
10 even strength assists
29 points at ES in 12:46 per game
Slaf
78 Games
13 Even strength goals
21 even strength assists
33 es points in 14:49
Im sorry, Slaf is not out performing Laf in any way shape or form at age relative seasons.
You want to compare not age relative seasons, and just 2023-24, Laf is at 56 points, slaf is at 48 with Slaf getting 2:59 of PP per game. If Laf had pp time, he'd be a 80-90 point player...

Rangers Draft Day
Laf has a shot at close to 60 even strength points. at under 4m for next season, thats an insane value.
Unless the starting offer is the 1st overall pick, and a top 6 roster player (which is a big overpay), theres no reason for the rangers to make that move.

I think Trouba is overpaid, Im not moving him for someone else whos overpaid but smaller.
Trouba is physical, and considering the rangers are in 1st place with him playing, his cap hit and play isn't a major issue.
Debrincat is not physical, is small, and while he had success in 9 playoff games, the sample size is so small (and he was playing with kane), that I dont have faith he can produce in the playoffs consistently.
He's also not getting PP time, which without it he'd have 41 points on the season.
I can find a 41 point scorer for a lot less than 7.5m cap hit.

Leon 24-25
The rangers dont do this at all because While straight comparing mika to leon, its not a close comparison, the amount of depth they would lose, plus the big incoming cap charge, makes absolutely no sense.
This would essentially be a bigger and worse version of the rick nash trade to NY, except Nash was signed for multiple years.
The rangers have an extremely deep and likely carefully managed cap. Trading away mika, lindgren, kakko, and berard would ruin that.

At 19 kakko put up more points than 30 year old brodzinski.
Kakko is currently elite defensively and struggling somewhat offensively (considering his line he’s basically all the offense)

Habs Offseason
So at least hab fans are including a first round pick now. But no. This is still selling low on Kakko AND more importantly, thats a lot of mid, with a 1st rd pick.
The only thing I move Kakko for is a top 6 NHL player on a steal of a contract, or an A+ prospect.
The rangers are a top 3 Eastern Conference team, his play isn't dragging us down, his cap hit isn't dragging us down. We have 0 incentive to move him for less than an insane haul.

Yup, thats exactly what Thomas is.
Now remind me how far into the playoffs he's carrying the roster you have?
STL is currently selling off. You sold off last year. You dont have any prospect better than the two being offered.
You're sitting in the dreaded middling of drafting. Not quite good enough to make the playoffs, not quite bad enough to get a bedard without an insane amount of luck, and youre also locked into contracts like Krug, which means you can't add another top end player from UFA.
So Yes the Blues should look at moving thomas now. Before he asks out and ruins any and all trade value, because you wont be able to make the playoffs in the next 5 years at this rate.

I dont disagree with the first point. I'll say that you can't have an entire team full of skill, and thats a big reason I think Lindgren would be a fit for CBJ, he would also be a really solid voice in the room who's been on a team in this exact situation.

I'll ignore the retention part for now,
ANA was open to moving zegras, his defensive liabilities are the reason hes been struggling. Mika is still very good defensively, putting him ahead of carlsson and McTavish would give them a much different roster composition and ready for the playoffs now, not in 4 years.

Im aware that its heavy retention. thats why its two top prospects plus the first. The only type of deal that nets both of those players is something for someone like Mcdavid. Thomas isnt even a top 10 center. He's a very good center, I'd even say he's elite, but the only reason for those two prospects would be the retention.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>littlejerryseinfeld</b></div><div>He has 3 goals and plays 13 mins a night. Why should we give up anything of value for him?</div></div>
Because the rangers don't need to move him.
He makes under 2.5 he's gonna make under 2.5 next season. He's currently a middle 6 defensive first player, whos struggling to get his offensive touch back.
He's 23 years old. He's not 38 and terrible. He's a season removed from 40 points, while bringing high end defense to a team that struggles with that.
The rangers need to take advantage of a player who's making under 2.5m not move him for a player who immediately needs an extension.
You want Kakko, great, Overpay for him. We don't need to move him.
