New York Islanders signed Brock Nelson (6 Years / $6,000,000 AAV)
Its not the AAV that bugs me that much. Thought he would get 5.5 mill. Its the years.. This contract is never going to be a steal, but it has potential to be a real bad deal in a few years.

Yes... The player has close to zero involvement with negotiations. Marner and his agent will of course talk, but Marner is not an expert in contracts. His agent is.... Has nothing to do with me knowing the Marner family. It is how negotiations work. Leafs low-ball, Marner camp counters big, they meet in the middle. Nothing to do with marner, just the agent doing his job. That is how it works you plug

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FlamesBlow</b></div><div>Someone hasnt been paying attention to his reported demands. He is looking for money, and thats his right. Being a leaf seems to mean very little to him. The Oil are cap tight but this team above is better than what skated off the ice last year. They are developing, cap is rising, bad contracts are coming off the books, this deal makes them better long term. The leafs are trying to win right now, every passing year without a cup is a year wasted for them, they cant make this same deal without making their team worse in the long run.</div></div>
You realize its the agent who sets the asking price...? Marner doesn't talk numbers until the agent says he is ready to sign... Marner loves Toronto and wants to play here. Learn how negotiation works?

Its complicated.. Performance bonuses count towards the cap, but they can be paid shifted to different years and teams are aloud certain overages.
It is safer to just assume a 3775000 cap hit for Hughes

Unrealistic and plausible Sabres all in
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rktkt66</b></div><div>With the Flyers hiring a new coach who relies on veterans and Giroux is clearly their heart-and-soul, there's no way that Philly ever considers trading him for a questionable prospect and draft picks.
Similarly, all you need to see is the Sharks' reaction as a team when Pavelski was seriously injured and hear the player interviews to know that Pavelski is revered in San Jose by players, management and fans. They won't allow him to walk away in free agency.
If you take those two scenarios out of the mix, the roster pretty much looks unchanged....?</div></div>
Yeah I see your points. The picks in the Giroux trade are pretty decent though.. 7 and 20's + a conditional..
Nylander is still a pretty solid prospect. I think that package is reasonable should Philly want to make the move to get younger.
Lets put it this way. I don't think it is far off.
The Sharks are going to be in cap hell this summer. Decisions are gonna need to be made. Could easily see the Sharks opting for younger more long term pieces.
Fair criticisms though

I see your point, but as an rookie RFA you don't have the same leverage as someone who has proven quality through multiple seasons. Perhaps I low-balled by a couple hundred K, but I assure you if its more, it won't be a lot more

Definitely.. But if Holl and Marleau both play, that is one less spot that needs to be filled for the Sharks. So technically they kinda do save a tiny bit of cap space.

If we are struggling to move out older bodies he may look to moving out a guy like Johnsson. It obviously isn't the first choice, but people seem to think moving out Marleau and Zaitsev is cake.
Brown and Naz are on the block for me personally.

You're moving out the right bodies, but a couple things:
A) You won't get a 1st for Kadri. I think Dallas would be a fit though if they don't go after Duchene.
B) If it were that easy to lose Zaitsev, he'd be gone already. Nobody is paying anything to take him, we will have to pay to get rid of him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Random2152</b></div><div>I figure Marner at 8 years would be closer to the Matthews Contract. Something along these lines:
8@11.616
7@10.866
6@10.116
5@9.366
4@8.616
3@8.241
2@7.866
1@7.491
I think Johnsson will get a touch more for 4 years as he is reportedly not being cooperative in terms of contract negotiations. Remember he took his QA last year to get a bigger payday now.
Kappy on the other hand is reportedly VERY team friendly and willing to cooperate on a shorter deal. I expect a shorter deal at a slightly lower (discounted) cap hit.
tl;dr
Mango:4@3.25
Kappy:2@2.5</div></div>
If Johnsson is "not being cooperative" we should trade him. We can't overypay rookies in this situation. My guess is Marner for 10.16x6

I second that deal, but I would rather give a 2nd and 3rd/ a prospect. We can't spare any more 1sts..
