An insider on a Jets message board is saying the Kings are the front runners for PLD and he’ll sign long term there as a sign and trade. Assuming that is a fact and the caphit is something reasonable you wouldn’t do Villardi+ for him?

Ok. So it’s the same thing as Trouba signing in Detroit. Not something Helle has ever said, just something others have wondered if it would be the case and then it becomes a “fact”. All I’ve heard Helle say is he wants to sign with a contender to win a cup and has no interest in a rebuild.
I think the Kings with Helle would be contenders but we can agree to disagree on that. The playoffs should have showed the Devils they need an upgrade between the pipes and they are my front runner.

Hadn’t heard that he wanted to sign near home. Source? All we’ve heard in Winnipeg is he wants to sign with a contender.
I think PLD makes the most sense for the Kings and Helle to the Devils.

There’s a good chance it would be even more than just 14oa if you actually wanted him. Buffalo probably gives up 13oa+ so you’d need to beat their offer as their pick is one spot sooner.
The pens prospect cupboard is pretty empty so it’s going to be a pretty long rebuild. Helle can drag any team into the playoffs. Will Sid and Geno have any magic left for once they get there. Kind of owe it to the hockey world to find out.
The one thing he likely learned in TO is that there is no replacement for good goaltending so I would assume addressing that will be a top order of business.

It’s a good thought. We likely add some in trading PLD, Scheif, Helle and others. In a typical year we’d probably be looking to trade back to get more picks but I don’t think we’d go that far. 25-28 is probably as far as we should consider.

Trade up
As others have mentioned you can reference free trade value charts like blue bull charts, as an example which in your example has Winnipeg trading away the 18 pick at a value of 17.2 and acquiring 41 at 4.9, 42 at 4.8 and 117 at 1.0 for a total of 10.7.
So unfortunately not even close and an instant reject. Using that chart most trades historically are pretty close to even value going both ways.
So 41 + 42 + 43 + 73 would be the value needed to move up to 18 but, while I’m not opposed to the Jets trading back, that is just way too far as I would still want to pick in the first round. So even if you offered all 3 2nds and a 3rd, the value is there but I’d still pass.

Offseason Towards Rebuild
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dougford</b></div><div>Top line C? Woah there bucko.
He's a 2C. Averages 60pts a season, subpar defensive metrics, not the best off ice track record, and has never proven good in the playoffs.
I made this in the ABOLUTE EVENT that Hughes, for some reason, wanted him now. And in the event of this trade, I provided a first, and a young, middle 6 player. Hop off the high horse.</div></div>
Entitled to your opinion but not your own facts. He tore Toronto a new one when he was in Columbus as exhibit A. There are easily searchable articles on what a strong playoff performer he is.
We’re clearly done here and it’s easy to see why. You view him as a 2c when he is better than Suzuki. He would be the best c on the Habs. Saying he is a 2c means you think there are at least 32 Cs that are better than him.
He scored 63 points in 73 games last season and was above a ppg pace when he picked up the hip flexor injury. He played through it but production did drop.
Plenty of scouting reports indicate that he’s strong defensively. I’m not familiar with which metrics you’re quoting since you didn’t actually provide any proof or send me somewhere I could look up the information for myself. We specifically played him with weak defensive players because he was strong in the d zone.
We couldn’t possibly have opinions further apart about PLD as a player which explains the gap in value. Good news for everyone really because the insulting trade proposal followed up by an insulting UFA offer means he likely doesn’t end up in Montreal and Habs fans don’t really want him nor do they really need him.

How would he not push Barron down to the 4th line where he should be? Barron sucks!.. lol
Personally I think keeping PLD to trade him at the 2024 TDL would be a dumb and very risky move and don't think the return would be much better.
Would the Avs give their 1st which is 27th overall and one of Ollosson or Berens, those two are probably their best prospects but neither look all that good yet, no better then Ylonen anyway, unless the Avs are willing to part with Newhook I don't see anything they'd likely be willing to offer
as any better then whats proposed here.</div></div>
But what about Seattle? Give Wright another year of seasoning and with their deep run they have to be thinking it may be worthwhile to add. That would be 20oa and then maybe Firkus or Goyette.
I’d want the prospect to be waiver exempt so we’d have options or be a clear cut middle 6 player.

I actually like Ylonen too, but the risk and reward is in how high the first is. We’d have locked ourselves into the lowest or second lowest possible pick. In your view is ylonen worth a 2nd, 3rd and then another second to trade up to where another pick likely falls? He’s not 2 - 2nds and a 3rd good to me. He’s a maybe middle six winger that would not push Barron down to the 4th line. So it’s Gus or him in the press box. A super late first and guy that may be a healthy scratch all year ain’t it for me.
Colorado doesn’t want Scheif but they would want pld…. Just saying.

Teams won't be lining up to sell the house for a TDL rental. It could be a first, sure, but it won't be much more than that.</div></div>
Go take a look at the return for top line c’s at the deadline and then filter down to those that turned out to be rentals and then get back to me. “Could be a 1st” who do you think you’re tricking? The comps are there. Find me a top line c rental that didn’t return a 1st+? I don’t think it’s ever happened. Maybe if they had a nmc and picked their destination or something but that wouldn’t be a relevant comp here.
Habs have the pieces to make a competitive offer, the fan base on here is choosing not to thinking they’re the only game in town, like he had a no move and would only waive to Montreal. He has a lot of value even as a rental to a team with no intention of extending him.

I think the commentary on the Habs trade and the fact he has Samberg on the bench and not locked into our top 4 shows he’s a Habs guy, not a Jets guy. A team like Seattle, Colorado, Carolina, Boston, that already knows they are a top 6 c from being a true contender and will be in the market for a rental will give more.
Convenient that other Jets stars are traded most of these places to satisfy their needs/use up their cap.
I’d rather hold PLD and flip him at the trade deadline then take a weak return like that. Unless someone we really like slips to 31 there is really no reason for the jets to lock in the worst case value for the 1st round pick acquired for a rental.

As a Jets fan I do think this is what it would take for the Devils to win the bidding war.
You’d need us to take vanacek’s contract. You’d be competing against 2023 1st round picks that are in the early teens from Pittsburgh (14oa) and Buffalo (13oa) where the 2024 1st makes us wait a year and is likely the 32nd pick in a draft that isn’t as strong as this year. 13 oa in this draft class probably nets a player equal or better than Holtz, who has talent but hasn’t proven anything at the nhl level yet.

To move from 17 to 5 I gave up 17, pld, Barron and Heinola. I actually thought it was a tongue in cheek response of the huge over correction on the counter to show how crazy the original ask was.
My bad for not recognizing it as a serious counter.
Reichel just isn’t proven enough for me to consider anything like that. He went ppg in the AHL and had a promising 20 game stretch but I’m not familiar enough to know if it was a hot spell, a cold spell or if that production could be counted on in the future.
The entire acgm is based on drafting a top line C at 5 so I couldn’t then trade that pick for a winger. As an ncaa player Rinzel has risk for us too as it’s easy for people to just skip to UFA. It always makes me nervous until they actually sign.
You look at Logan Cooley and you just wonder…

To be clear, I do t think we should do this but to be the devil’s advocate. If Lambert isn’t ready, you could try Lucious or shift 55 to rw and trey Perfetti at C with Barron or Harkins at 2lw.
I don’t feel like Ehlers/Perfetti are bound to be injured but they both got hurt last year so I clearly can’t say they won’t either. I agree that this likely sets the franchise back a half decade if everyone decides to walk for nothing.
I would still pay, but I can afford to and I like going to the games with my friends. I like watching the shiny new toy and really we’ve retained so many guys it feels pretty stale. We need some new blood even just to keep it entertaining.

I certainly had interest in Lambert and I actually was hoping CHI would draft him with that very pick that they got Rinzel with. But, if they value Rinzel highly enough to draft him over Lambert in the first place, I don't think one single, albeit great, junior season on a stacked team is going to change that.
Also, although Rinzel wasn't on my radar at the draft last year, I looked back at all the rankings leading up to the draft to see exactly how BIG of a "reach" it was picking him. It seems most scouts had him ranked right there in the early 2nd round. So, he was already ranked as if he COULD slide into the late 1st round. I definitely wouldn't mind bringing Lambert over to CHI, but not for this.
I guess I didn't make a counter offer though, because I figure if you want this much then the gap is probably way too big.</div></div>
I wanted us to draft Rinzel with our 2nd round pick but I do know he was a riser. It makes sense that if you just passed in a guy at the draft you wouldn’t typically trade the guy you chose over him.

The thing is, Lambert was projected to be a top 3 pick going into the season and then everyone passed on him, including us once, due to his attitude. Well having an entire league pass on you is a real wake up call turns out. He’s done everything asked including going to the WHL.
There was a hawks acgm where they asked on Lambert and what the price would be. I thought it would be fun to put the Reichel cousins together on a line.
Lambert’s upside is so huge that I wouldn’t do Rinzel for him straight up, and Rinzel was a pretty decent reach when you took him.
Anyhow, of 5 trades I got 1 agreed to and the other 4 were so insulting nobody even wanted to have a discussion about what a counter offer could be… despite me suggesting that was what I wanted to do.
