CAP TROUBLE
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>drewjenks</b></div><div>Yeah pretty much ... but an amazing GM would still be 20 million over the cap ... so there will have to be some tough decisions.
Some good players will have to be traded ... or some futures will have to be dumped with the bad contracts.</div></div>
Virtanen and Goldobin will have to be great to get that money
Biega will not get paid that much, 7th d at best so paid < 1 mil (plus he would be 32/33 when this happens)
Tanev is injured too much to get paid that, i suspect he will be traded or walks to FA
Demko will get paid 7 mil before markstrom.
if Petey wants McDavid money he'd better be putting up McDavid stats. 100+ points for at least 2 seasons
i get your point but all these contracts are based on the best possible production from all the players, Virtanen, Goldobin and Tanev have not shown it so far

Dealing before the season starts
Use rookie mode when putting Dorsett on LTIR since his full value will be removed from the cap.
Hossa is an LTIR candidate, no need to buy him out and take the cap hit. Even spread over the remaining years, they can afford to eat the hit to have him sit in the press box and pay him the minimal amount cash value remaining on his contract.
The Canucks would probably opt for force Shaw into the minors and eat the cap hit vs the prolonged buyout.
Nilsson will return more than a mid-late 7th, also not sure why the Canucks are trading within their own division. And Markstrom is the better trade asset to move if you want to push Demko's development.
Overpaying Virtannen by at least 1/2mil. I'd expect him to get 850k-1mil on a 1-2 yr deal considering what he has produced.
Juolevi isn't likely ready.
Not really sure what you are thinking with the Montreal trade? Are you just trying to unload Sutter and Guddy, because you are undervaluing both with that return? I think either one of them, not both, plus a mid-rounder gets that deal done assuming Montreal really wants out of the Shaw deal that bad.
Lol, Gaunce and eating the Hossa Contract is not going to return Jokiharju, You won't even be able to get Forsling back let alone any of Chicago's other high-end D-prospects... Clendenning is the only player Chicago would entertain in return for Gaunce, even then that might be a big ask, because Chi is perfectly happy to keep Hossa on LTIR and pay him the minimal remaining on his heavily frontloaded contract.

Canucks World
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Nucks17</b></div><div>good tanev trade</div></div>
Good for the Canucks, yes. But that is a terrible trade for Toronto. Everyone jumps on them for needing a RHD who can play top minutes. Liljegren is one of the top defensive prospects in hockey and he's right handed and projects to be a top pairing guy eventually. Why would Toronto trade the very thing that everyone is so Hot for? Liljegren is a non starter for any deal for a defenceman. It just doesn't make any sense for them to make that move. And before you say, they are in win now mode, just stop. They are in win for the next 7 years mode. So they won't make trades that'll jeopardize the future for something that will make the team a bit better now.
The Leafs would have a hard time finding cap space for Tanev for next season, so that makes the trade difficult. They'd likely need Vancouver to eat half his salary which I do understand will drive up the price. But by himself, he's worth at most a late 1st rounder. If you retain salary, then the Leafs would likely add another asset but nothing more than maybe a 2nd or a b prospect.

Draft
The Tanev trade is way too much. TO doesn't need to trade Martin's contract they have tonnes of space. Kapanen is more valuable to Toronto than Granlund would be. So that leaves a pick for Tanev and he isn't worth a 1st.
A 2nd and a prospect, likely a non roster LHD. Think Borgman, Rosen, Nielsen etc.

ROR?
Five stars for wanting O'Reilly
I do not know much about Tanev other than I see his name on numerous trades. Since the offers for him seem to be substantial, I have to presume he is a very good defensive defenseman.
So Tanev, Goldobin, N and a 2nd may actually be close to a fair value. (I am basing this on the trades offers for him), but I think we need to add the obvious Jonathan Dahlen. Then the Sabres could have Dahlen and Dahlin and Rasmus and Rasmus.

What would it take for Vancouver to get Dylan Strome?
I'm thinking they'd want that high pick and/or prospect you mentioned, or at least one good young player. Strome is still a really unproven player at the NHL level, so if they gave him up and he went on to succeed somewhere else I'm guessing the Coyotes would like to point to a single young piece that they got back in the trade to justify it. A package deal doesn't really make sense for them right now, considering they're nowhere near contending yet.

Worst contracts for picks at draft (TBL,CHI,DAL) READ DESCRIPTION
If the Canucks went this direction I could see the TBL and DAL deals being at least talked about. No way CHI gives up that much when Hossa can go on LTIR until the end of his contract, and Seabs contract is bad but they don't really have anyone to replace him yet either.
