Prospect Pool post Draft
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Waffelz</b></div><div>But that's the case with every prospect group. When you say it doesn't look good, it objectively does compared to almost any other team in the league (except maybe the Sabres/Wings/Jackets). For the relatively short time that they have been rebuilding, San Jose has done an incredible job acquiring high tier assets. They jumped from 17th to 4th in rankings last year, and will almost certainly go to 1st or 2nd this year.</div></div>
I point this out frequently, but I give the Athletic's prospect pool rankings a major asterisk. The biggest thing for the Sharks is they've had very few prospects graduate. Teams like Chicago had Bedard, Korchinski, and Vlasic graduate while the Sharks only lost Eklund. That's not to downplay the massive growth of the Sharks' pool, I just think I'd rate them below a few more teams.

Changes
It's not the same situation as the Mrazek deal at all.
1. Mrazek had one less year than Campbell has
2. Mrazek is making 1.2 mil less than Campbell
3. Mrazek is actually a decent goaltender in the NHL, Campbell isn't even in the NHL
4. Blackwood had a very solid year and has value. There was no goaltender going the other way in the Mrazek deal

Thats a pass by the Kings, tried to get Chychrun and didn't work now there is no need for him. Plus if the Kings have 4.6m to spend on Chychrun then they could just clear 1m more and resign Roy.

(SJS/VGK) - Hertl, 2025 3rd (SJS), 2027 3rd (SJS) for Edstrom, 2025 1st (VGK)
With the Sharks retaining on Hertl until 2030 for Vegas, a division rival no less, they should 100% be receiving an Eichel-like return here.
When Buffalo gave Vegas just one 3rd round pick and sent Eichel and his entire 10 million dollar cap hit to Vegas, the Sabres got the following:
Alex Tuch
#17 overall pick from 2019 Peyton Krebs
#16 overall pick in 2022
#64 overall pick in 2023
When San Jose gave Vegas two 3rd round picks and sent a salary retained Hertl and a 6.75 million cap hit to Vegas, the Sharks got the following:
#32 overall pick from 2023 David Edstrom
Vegas' 1st round pick for 2025 because Vegas wants to keep their 2024 1st for when the draft happens at the Sphere.
And now, the Sharks can't retain salary on any player until the Summer of 2025.
And they are also only allowed 1 salary retention between the Summer of 2025 and the Summer of 2027.
This is unacceptable for the San Jose Sharks.
They deserve better.

I think the Sharks would do that if the NJ 2nd stays a 2nd. Not exactly big needs for the Sharks at the moment but the likely hood of those draft picks becoming as good as those two players is very unlikely

Honestly, if Celebrini goes one and Levshunov goes two, I think they consider it. The dropoff (in terms of Sharks needs) after 2 is quite large.

Unrealistic Trade Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>goodfella</b></div><div>Respectfully, you need to earn your spot. Despite your age/history imo.
If Vlasic justifies waiving or a buyout, it is what it is.
However, we might need him to reach the cap floor.</div></div>
Ferraro is an obvious mainstay (if not traded). Thrun has more than earned his spot. Shakir has earned a spot in the NHL and in his two games, has shown he's capable of staying up. Okhotiuk I think needs some time down in the minors but is a decent 7th d-man, and Knyzhov has shown he can be a utility guy on any pairing but was a victim of circumstance and only sent down because he was the only waiver eligible d-man who they knew wouldn't get claimed with his contract. That's not including MacDonald who's primarily been a forward this season, but mostly due to injuries to forwards.
But yeah, I agree mostly but in situations where the developing player is comparable to Vlasic, that's where the difficult decisions need to be made. I've liked Grier's approach to being patient with prospects and slowly introducing them to the NHL and not just throwing them in the deep end where they might drown (ex: Korchinski & Reicher), but when they're 21-23 they need to be getting full time reps at the NHL level
Side-note, MacDonald may be the most underrated Shark this season. Not too many guys you can plug in at literally any position and still be a reliable depth player

Sharks don't even consider that. If they wanted Gregor they would have kept him. And if Sharks were willing to part with Ferraro for a late 1st he'd already be gone.
It doesn't matter what your perceived value is of Ferraro as a player, because the org values him extremely highly and doesn't want to move him unless it's an extremely good return.
Edit: Lmao I also just realized thats a first rounder 2 and a half years from now. Very easy no

Full marks btw for NOT doing retention. That's not a joke either, I'm serious.</div></div>
I hear you. Fans on this site can be a little rude with that stuff. No team is retaining for 7 years...
I think the difference is I actually really appreciate Hertl as a player where as most ACGMs see him as a middle 6 plug of sorts (no idea why, but they do).

I think Beck is a solid B prospect. If you look at Horvat and Fiala deals, which I think are good comparables, they got a middling 1st and a B prospect, plus some other pieces in Horvat's case. I get that you want to maximize value, but with his age and his contract, and point production, comparing him to Horvat is generous.
