Leafs 2024 2025 Offseason Discussion Part 1: Kill or Be Killed
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>Kind of like a Bertuzzi type deal...
I don't see the Canucks affording him and Hronek...
And Z's unlikely to get 5... Teams don't put enough stock in playoffs to pay 1.75x... Kind of like what happened with Bert
The games would go:
Woll: 41
Stolarz: 30
Hildeby: 11
And the Marner deal would be picks and prospects based in this scenario</div></div>
I have zero faith that Woll will play 41 games. I do like him but he hasn't proven he can stay healthy. I mean if he does stay healthy and plays relatively well, that's very good news for the organization.

Not interested in Tanev, worried about the mileage on this guy.

I have an idea on goalie, been afraid to say it out loud.
Hypothetically if Boston traded Ullmark to Utah, in a Marner trade...

7 for Montour would be BRUTAL, imo. The guy has one crazy outlier season and honestly isn't much of a puck mover/creator despite his reputation. He's a volume chance guy, lots of low percentage stuff from him from what I've seen.
Would also be taking a hard pass on the Marner deal. No chance I trade him for a package centered around pretty much any goalie, let alone a 31y/o who's pretty much been a solid tandem guy for the vast majority of his career.

Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 7 - Shambles
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>I think they all will figure it out eventually. Matthews and Willy already have. If both were healthy, that series could have been different. Those two under a coach who can adapt to the playoffs will find another level. Marner I am less sure about but I think he will at some point. Likely not with the Leafs.
If you can get value for Marner trade him. JT is riding out his deal and likely resigning at a major discount and he will be loved again. No one would be complaining about him if he made 4 million less than he does. After next season if he signed for 2 years at 5, it would be a bargain. It's one more year, we knew this could be a possibility. He's not trash.</div></div>
I don't know about Matthews. Of all the playoff games Matthews has played, we haven't seen him be dominant like other top players often. I'm not sure about Willy either because the goal scoring has been there more consistently than the others, his lack of attention to detail the past few years stands out like a sore thumb.
Shanahan and Treliving talked about playoff goals and how generally they are ugly and messy. These core players have never struck me as players that have the will to get those ugly and messy goals.

Toronto spends 59.7M on their forwards. That’s more than 71% of the salary cap (83.5M)
Teams qualified for the 2nd round
Edmonton 58%
Colorado 58%
Rangers 58%
Carolina 62%
Boston 49%
Florida 59%
Vancouver 53%
They couldn’t score more than 2 goals

When Blue Jays won the World Series they had Jack Morris, with ERA of 5 - with most wins on team. Juan Guzman and Jimmy Key had ERA 3 and were well back in wins.
I hated it at the time - Morris was a fake. But somehow the team played better with him on the mound and it was real - he was the starter that gave them the best chance to win.

Watching tonight's game (and frankly every other game where one of the core 4 has been injured) has made me realise something. The very idea of having a core 4 is why this team hasn't had success in the Matthews era. You can have too much of a good thing, and that's exactly the case with the Leafs.
Look at the Sharks after they got EK65. They should've been unstoppable, yet Burns was less productive and Karlsson wasn't the same player he was in Ottawa. This team will never win with a core 4
