I feel like Heinola has been a prospect since I was 12 years old

Tbh I feel like if Montreal swaps both Struble and Evan’s with Just Justin Barron, J would be happy with this deal. As long as they don’t find a better player, like Andersson, to buy with Rutger as part of the package, this works well.</div></div>
You want Struble over Barron. Struble is a better player. He’s going to be at worst the best D on your 3rd pairing, with very real top 4 upside. He’s a beast, he’s strong as a bull, can skate, will join the rush, and will be very solid defensively. A perfect stabilizing piece next to an offensive Dman but who can also chip in here and there himself and can skate really well.
Barron has a chance to be an offensive defenseman in a top 4 but those chances are reducing every year. He makes incredibly stupid plays way to often and doesn’t defend well. If all goes right he does have the talent to be really good. I still think he could put it all together when he’s like 24/25 years old.
If you want Barron I’d throw him into this deal with the other pieces.

This isn’t nhl 24, he has 2nd line upside. Maybe a slim chance he could be a complimentary winger on your top line, but that’s not ideal and that’s the absolute best case scenario. Nobody is giving them a return based on the best case and most unlikely scenario. Teams will account for the risk. It’s why he’s not already traded. You’re not getting a haul for a likely middle 6 piece.
A first that could be as high as 11th, and if it ends up in the top 10 turns into an unprotected 1st in 2026 is a huge piece in this deal. A better 1st than any other team is going to offer. Along with a defenseman like Struble: who’s a former 2nd round pick, fills a big need and has 2nd pairing upside is about the return the Jets should expect. Adding a quality 4th line C and what will be a high 3rd round pick is icing on the cake.

Matheson is an offensive LHD. We already have 2 of those. It’s not a great trade fit. This deal would work if you swapped Struble and Evans with Barron.
Honestly true. This defense took advantage of a packed NHL schedule. The moment a team had extensive gameplanning against it, it was immediately destroyed. This defense needs an urgent upgrade. However, nobody Montreal is offering will be sufficient enough on their own.
Maybe have your team win one in a salary cap league before talking like you’re the defending champs.
Very disingenuous. Rutger is regarded as one of the best prospects in the NHL and warrants a serious trade package. Nobody cares what you think Rutgers upside is.</div></div>
He’s known as having 2nd line upside.

Evans would maybe improve the 4th line center depth, but certainly isn't an improvement over the Jets 3C (Lowry). Doesn't really help all that much.
Struble can't crack an awful Habs team, so he wouldn't make the Jets' defense either this season. But at least he is waiver-free, so would help in the AHL. But he is worse than LDs Morrissey & Samberg for sure....and isn't a huge improvement on Heinola, if he is at all.</div></div>
Actually Struble did crack the Habs defense which is incredibly deep. He’s a really good player and showed some really good flashes as a rookie. Much better than Heinola.
I hope you don’t expect to get to much for a potential middle 6 winger. A 4c (Jets are desperate and will use him as a 3c) a potential #4/#5 D, and a 1st. That’s great value for McGroarty and fills every need the Jets have positionally.

No you said that’s what Winnipeg would require the Habs to do in order to accept the deal.
So to conclude, your take is that if you were GM, you personally wouldn’t do it because of Anderson being in the deal, even though he does not impact the team you manage in any negative way as it pertains to winning a cup over the next two years? Okay then. Not smart, but I respect you staying consistent.

like i said, there is no guarantee that a draft pick will turn into anything. you're assuming that pick 5 is going to be a guaranteed can't miss superstar........there is no guarantee.....especially in a draft where everything after pick 1 is a total gong show. picks 2-12 are almost completely interchangeable at this point.</div></div>
Yeah but you specifically asked what the player Habs drafted at 3rd overall did to help build a cup contender.. exactly the same thing Tkachuk and Stutzle did. Nothing.
Of course there is no guarentee with the pick but there’s no guarantee McGroarty becomes a good nhler or an nhler at all and there’s no guarantee Ehlers will ever become a valuable playoff player… nothing is guaranteed in this world but I’m taking the 5th overall over a guy in Ehelers that I know isn’t a game changer and McGroarty who doesn’t have that potential. All I have to do is take back a bad contract that doesn’t hurt my chances at a cup which were 0 to begin with. Sign me up.

Ehlers? Meh. he’s a decent 2nd line forward but he’s useless in the playoffs. I’m expecting them to get a late 1st and a decent prospect when they trade him. McGroarty is a very good prospect, was 14th overall and has progressed really well. I see a future top sixer but not a game changer. 5th overall is worth way more. Taking back Anderson shouldn’t stop the deal. I agree that it probably would because GM’s think short term. If I were GM? It’s a no brainer, who cares about that contract, doesn’t hurt you at all, you ain’t winning anyway.

Right so that 5th overall pick has to be enticing enough to take back Anderson, no? Hypothetically of course cause this deal isn’t meant for Ottawa but you get my point. You get a potential superstar for the next 15-20 years, who cares about that contract for the next 2

Meh Ullmark looked that great because he was behind an incredible defensive team for years, something Ottawa doesn’t have. Will take a while for them to put it all together especially if they bring in quite a few new faces, they have a new coach and new management. Takes time.
