Maybe for a defenseman who has also an expiring contract. But there isn't a single team in the league that would trade an young and elite D who is locked up long term for a rental.

Big CGY trade sets up big UFA
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bast</b></div><div>Not ignoring it, it's a decent pick and I think Markstrom alone is worth it.
Taken 15th from 2003-2018: Denisenko, Brannstrom, Kunin, Senyshyn, Larkin, Pulock, Ceci, Miller, Forbort, Holland, Karlsson, Plante, Helenius, O'Marra, Radulov, R. Nilsson.
There are 3/15(20%) great players - Karlsson, Miller and Larkin. And another 2/15(13%) I would be pretty happy with as draft picks/return for Markstrom - Pulock, Radulov. The other 10/15 are mostly busts and replacement level.
Until those players make an impact in the NHL they're just names on a page.
Taking Berggren for 3 cap dumps isn't something I'm too keen on.</div></div>
Okay, which player would you rather keep as a Flames fan Matt Coronato or Markström?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bast</b></div><div>Not trading a top goalie for a bunch of overpaid spare parts in: Holl, Husso, and Maatta. All these guys are dime a dozen and can be had for less in free agency.</div></div>
Just ignoring that there is pick #15 included? I'm definitely not trading a potential Anton Silayev/Liam Greentree/Michael Brandsegg-Nygård for a 34y old goalie. Think about it from the Red Wings perspective - Husso & Holl can be bought out for cheap and Määttä holds little value still. Just need to do a little bit of Cap gymnastic and we can make it work.
When was the last time we saw an old goaltender get a Top 20 pick + a decent young player in return?
Why would a rebuilding team trade for a goaltender who isn't even here when we're truely competing?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blazingbat11</b></div><div>Would Soderblom add size? yes, absolutely... Would he add skill? no, absolutely not.
There's nothing in his game that he has shown to be nothing more than a 4th line fringe NHLer. Trading Barron, who still has top 4 potential, for Soderblom is a waste of an asset. At most I'd throw is a mid rd draft pick, or a Ylonen, or a Kidney. That's it.</div></div>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWCJWNgJ2WE
Nonsense. You clearly haven't seen him play then. He is the exact opposite of what you describe. He's massive, but plays like a 5'10" guy with skill. Söderblom's biggest flaw is that he doesn't use his size as an advantage enough.

But Bennett has more value now than when he was with Calgary. He's a better player now.

Future Powerplay and draftpick
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lancebmx</b></div><div>If for some reason we win the lottery and have our choice, I take Catton. Silayev is tempting as well though, big shut down D that can skate are hard to come by. Around #15 though there are some interesting players. MBN w would be a top choice for me. Connolly and Greentree wouldn't be bad either.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DanielSan92</b></div><div>MBN and Chernyshov both fit the Yzerman/Draper mold of hard working players.
Both also fit a need as bigger wingers that play with some edge. We’ve got a lot of small guys. Even Mazur is edgy but not big.</div></div>
Similar thoughts. A future Top 4: Silayev-Seider and Edvinsson-ASP would be 🔥
MBN is a Red Wing if he's still available when we pick. I could bet on that💯. Right handed sniper who plays hard along the boards & great two-way player.

There is a good chance that one of Brandsegg-Nygård, Liam Greentree or Helenius is available when the Red Wings pick in the (14-19 range). Definitely not giving up that good of a prospect just to free up little bit of Cap space.
Fabbri can be bought out for pretty cheap or traded for positive value if we retain a little bit of money.

Maybe if Markström was 10 years younger, but Detroit is not in a position where they can trade away valuable assets for a 34y old goalie.

I wouldn't do this.
Elmer can be dominant with the puck, as he showed in a small sample size last season. Red Wings need size and players who can hold onto the puck. Even if Söderblom doesn't become more than a bottom-6F, he will be a really important one in that role. And a fan favorite.

Maybe not Määttä, but Kyle Davidson traded for Anthony Beauvillier who is worse than Fabbri. Similar Cap hit than Fabbri, No salary retained either. So saying that it's not even a remotely realistic destination is kinda weird. Buy low and sell high at the next Deadline;)
