Mercer won't cost $4M on a 3-year deal. So, there are some savings to be found there.
Don't bring back Tierney.
Holtz is going to be on the 3rd line: Palat-Haula-Holtz.
I also don't see the Devils going after a rental with 10OA. (Fitz has said if it gets traded it won't be for a rental.)

At this rate, I'm just going to wait for Jarnkrok and Kampf become free agents after the Maple Leafs buy them out with how many times they are offered as trade bait.
Nobody wants them at $2M+ per year.

Devils would want Boqvist back over Merkulov, especially at that price.
2025 1st for Ullmark, maybe a 2024 4th for Boqvist?

Would TOR be willing to eat any money on Kampf or Jarnkrok? Those two are constantly being mocked to the Devils, but for the money they make no deal is worth it.
Leafs would need to eat on them to get rid of them.

I think the Devils would be willing to take that deal.
However, I'd prefer if it were just for Utah's 2nd rounder (2024). That would allow the Devils to take the 2nd rounder and move it in a bigger deal for Ullmark. (Understandably, this would be a wish that is likely asking too much.)
(I'd also be okay with the trade being for the Rangers 2nd rounders in 2025 and 2026, in hopes that player becomes great and then we get to hold it over the Rags heads forever that we got a great player with their pick.)

Hughes Tkachuk Ullmark
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>Quinn - Unlikely to be an option. Would be fun, but they ain’t selling and we are spending elsewhere. (Return would be massive)
Ullmark - Devils on his no trade list. And he is in a contract year, so isn’t likely to waive unless we overpay on extension. If Devils overpay on extension, they won’t want to pay on trade price. If Devils underpay on trade price, Boston won’t want to trade. See where I am going? Ullmark to NJD also ain’t happening.
Brady - See comps like Eichel, Meier, Nash…would be one good player (Mercer, Marino), one good prospect (Holtz, Casey), a top-10 protected 1st and a conditional mid pick based on results.</div></div>
So you're saying the following would be a trade package for Tkachuk?
Marino, Holtz, 2025 1st Rounder (Top-10 protected -> 2026 1st rounder), & 2024 3rd rounder.

As long as Rempe is a thing in NY, Big Mac is on my team.

Happy everybody is taking this semi-seriously.
I would be down to trade Nemec in a deal for Quinn Hughes. What else would need to be in that deal?

If you want to get rid of Rielly, it's going to require LOTS of retention or draft picks going WITH him, which would cripple the TML for many many years.

Saros before draft

But I get the timing on core guys don’t fit with draft picks. Maybe there is a three-way option?</div></div>
I wonder if a potential 3-way deal between Nashville, New Jersey, and Calgary could exist.
Saros to Devils, Markstrom to the Preds, and some other considerations to Calgary.
Gives the Devils their long-term goalie, gives the Preds a goalie for the next season or two (before Askarov takes over) while they're still competing AND an out from Saros ahead of his long-term extension, and gets Calgary stuff for Markstrom while they're rebuilding.

Lindholm won't be that cheap. Lots of teams need a top-6 center/winger. He's going to get over $7M, easily.
My guess? A 7-year/$7,500,000 deal gets Lindholm.

Swayman is signing for $8M+.
Ullmark is not going to get back the 10OA, nevermind an additional 2nd in 2025.
Ullmark WITH picks MAY get you 10OA, but those picks would have to come from Boston to NJ.

Tanking in style
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Traptor</b></div><div>His play was consistent all year. What changed was the D-core infront of him. The flames moved their top pairing at TDL in Hanifin and Tanev.
As top 4 D rolling Kylington and Miromanov as top 4D. Kylington hasn't played in a year and a half, and Miromanov who was like 8th or 9th on the VGK depth chart and had a grand total of 29 career NHL games at 26 years old.
But fair enough if Markstrom isn't your cup of tea. NJD management appears to have thought differently with how close a deal appeared to be at TDL.</div></div>
TDL is a different story than offseason. Fewer moving parts at TDL (Boston wasn't going to trade Ullmark, Nashville wasn't going to trade Saros). The Devils NEEDED a goalie THEN. Flames had all the negotiation power.
Now, there are more options for the Devils to find the best fit.
Personally, I think Markstrom is fine. BUT, I'd prefer Saros (even with an extension at $8M for 8 years) because he can grow with the team. Long-term goalie plays are better than stop-gaps imo.

THIS. Swayman is going to go from making ~$1M per year to $8M+. That eats up over 33% of the Bruins "free cap" right there. Add in DeBrusk set to make $4M+ again, and the Bruins only have $8M (at best) to shore up any holes along with getting a top-6 center. That's not enough.
Ullmark is going to be traded. It makes too much sense.

Trying again
Devils decline. Cap space is everything.
Devils are not interested in a player making $10M+, especially when trading away 4 players who would make the same as Petersen who will provide more diversity across the ice.
The Bratt contract, Nemec rookie contract, and Mercer's likely $3-$3.5M are all good deals for allowing better roster construction. (As is Holtz, but I expect him to be traded.)

For this trade? NJ says "YES!"
Draft picks have value, and trading away from the 10OA spot would be tough, but getting 2 Top-40 picks PLUS a real starting goalie is 100% worth it.

Busy offseason
If I was Fitzgerald and this was the trade to get Saros to NJ, I'd do it.
Holtz is replaceable via free agency. Casey is blocked by Hamilton-Nemec-Marino. Allen is (hopefully) set to be the back-up next year from a goalie trade.
Would mean re-signing one (or both) of Schmid and Daws again, but either of them behind Saros is a goalie tandem that could go far in the playoffs.

Again, if you read my description, you would see that this whole idea was about what was possible under the salary cap.

Thought Experiment Family Matters
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mv21227</b></div><div>Would need to be a more significant add than Marino. Nemec is a great young player, but Hughes is already a top 3 dman in the league, a soon to be Norris winner, our captain, and still only 24. That’s what you hope Nemec can become one day, but there’s no guarantee he will. For the Canucks to take that risk they’d need quite a bit more on top of Nemec
For comparison try to think about what you’d want in a hypothetical Jack Hughes trade. Then take a bit less off of that as Jack is a bit more valuable due to being a center and having a longer term contract</div></div> Thank you for your legitimate reply and thoughts on a trade idea like this. The comparison of a Jack Hughes trade from my perspective does give me a better framework to work from.
I will continue to hit the books until I can find something that seems fair for both sides! :)
