Remember the days when it didnt cost your first born to acquire a defenceman
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>Let's try to use our imaginations here and maybe break from the same train of thought that has been used time and time again. I do not want a marquee player, they all will cost wayyyyyyy tooo much in assets that the trade will be a loss. I don't like losing trades, so I am tempering my expectations and looking for a cost effective upgrade over Hainsey. It won't be a higher end player. More like a 2nd pair guy who can skate well enough to not hold Reilly back. Everyone on here hears people say the Leafs could use some defensive help and they immediately want a block buster. Those trades aren't going to work out well for TO. Defenceman cost too much right now and it would be a trade similar to the Hall for Larrson trade (I don't care to hear anything about Hall is way better than Nylander, that isn't the point).</div></div>
Let's all just take a breather...
The point I was trying to make is that I don't think we can upgrade over what we already have.

They need an upgrade over Hainsey, someone who can actually keep up with the speed of the game. I have no thirst for guys like Parayko, Pietrangelo or Brett Pesce. Those guys will cost WAYYYYY more than they are worth and I refuse to overpay when a more cost effective route could be taken. I'd honestly rather trade for Connor Carrick than give up a kings ransom for a "2 or 3" defenceman (which is a ridiculously vague classification) So what could the Leafs acquire at the deadline who would be an upgrade over Hainsey?</div></div>
Why not just play Dermott with Reilly, and Hainsey with Oz?

At this point, as others have mentioned, you can't upgrade the Defense without downgrading the Forwards.
The Leafs cap situation is also a problem unless you're looking for a rental.
Look at it this way, nobody wants to give up a good RHD, and if they do, the Leafs probably don't want that player for the same reason their team is willing to move them (defensive issues, cap hit, etc.)
I'd rather see the Leafs go the Dermott route and wait for one of our prospects to establish themselves (Lil'green).
If they do make a trade for an RHD, it's probably for Playoff Depth.

Weber is slow and he's declining and all you fans who think he's still an elite defenceman are in for a rude awakening.</div></div>
I'm not saying he's the greatest in the league, but he's not written off just yet. The man needed knee surgery after last season so let's keep that in mind. He should be better this year than last.
If he had 2-3 years left on his deal, teams would be lining up with offers.

I think every team has an interest in Shea Weber, just not for 7 more years.
To be fair, Shea Weber doesn't need to skate fast. He's there to destroy pucks in their end and players in yours.

Realistic Nylander Trade- Read Description
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>clark</b></div><div>there is so little cap savings, about 75,000, it's insignificant if signed in November.. what will boesner want if they see 20 goal scorer Nylander getting 7.5m. Horton's contract only affects the leaf this year, and since the rosters are set, the leafs wouldn't be added money away. generally players on LT IR do not affect a teams cap at all.</div></div>
The Cap savings is $339,862 after Nov 1/18 before Dec 1/18. <a href="https://twitter.com/CapFriendly/status/1045315053539545088" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://twitter.com/CapFriendly/status/1045315053539545088</a>
Not a lot, but it might make the difference in resigning another player (IE Kapanen).
LTIR starts after the start of the regular season, meaning Horton has to be on the Roster game 1 (or so I hear). So effectively, the Leafs have to start the season with a max Cap of $74,200,000 + whatever the Cap increase for 20-21, and 22 players on the roster.
Also, we can't forget about any Bonus $ overages that might be carried over to next season.

I think the Leafs would sign him @$7.5m after Nov 1/18 for the Cap savings down the road.
The only way I see the Leafs taking this deal is if Van takes Horton's contract back (For LTIR or leave him in a cave somewhere, whatever).
Van wouldn't need to retain on Tanev, either.

4 - 1ST picks, and you can't sign him to 8 years, 7 max unless I'm misinformed.
Philly should do well this year. I don't know if they really need Nylander.
Those picks and Cap hit might be better spent elsewhere.

Matta is a good defenceman, but the Leafs don't need another LHD. If anything, the Leafs would be more interested in Shultz.
Montreal, maybe Winnipeg, is a better fit for Matta.

Well, considering what you are asking for, and what you're willing to give up, Jake Gardiner fits your plan. Besides, pairing him with Shea Weber gives him far more support than what the Leafs are giving him.

NJD Enough for Nylander
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Newanda</b></div><div>This might be old thinking, and as a Devils fan, but I made the trade with Vatanen instead of Severson because of Severson's size. Due to the fact that the Devils already have Vatanen (5'10" 180lbs) Greene (5' 11"190lbs), Butcher (5' 10" 190lbs), and Ty Smith (5' 11" 175lbs), hopefully Smith will playing in the NHL soon, the Devils already have a undersized D-group and got pushed around at times last season. Personally I would rather add more onto trade with Vatanen then to lose Severson.
Also you a probably right about Nylander getting paid more, but I didn't put too much thought into that and just used whole even numbers.</div></div>
I forgot that Vatanen was RHD, to be honest, so I would take the original trade.
I would rather have Severson for the same reason you want to keep him, but also because he's younger and is locked in for longer.
Most people would argue that Vatanen is the better player, but I feel Severson is a better fit for the Leafs current needs.
I would even drop the 3rd if it made the deal work.
Of all the trades I see on this site, I must say that this (your original trade) is actually one of the best in terms of value for both teams - thank you.

I think if you swapped Severson for Vatanen this is pretty fair.
I would imagine if Nylander would sign for 7x7M he would have signed already. You may be looking at 7.5+.

Ideas from the Athletic
Ya, that is true, but on a long enough timeline almost every player gets traded. Really I was trying to illustrate that not every top d is a top 5 pick. I think we have some decent prospects that could turn out. Look at Dermot, he was developed properly. Give them some time and we might have at least another middle pair d, maybe even better (hoping Lil'Green pans out).

Trading for any Top 1-2 RHD is a losing battle. Nobody wants to give them up, and if they do, they want a king's ransom.
Every other team has had to draft them, which I think the leafs should do.
Not every 1RHD needs to be a top pick either:
Weber - 2nd round (49th)
Faulk - 2nd round (37th)
Subban - 2nd round (43rd)
Chara - 3rd round (56th)
The leafs would be better off using their 1st and 2nd picks going after D, then trying to trade for one and breaking the bank/roster to do it.

Kadri Traded
Kadri is integral to this team. It's not just the production, but his transition into a solid 2-way C.
His contract is perfect value and he's versatile enough to play 2nd line C, if needed.
Ghost is really good, but Gardiner plays a similar role as an offensive LHD.
Right after making this trade, TML would be looking to trade for a Kadri-type 3C.

Leafs, but keeping Jake Gardiner (somehow maybe)
Nylander will need to be locked up for 8 years and it will probably be around $6.5-7M range - a bridge deal will sink the leafs unless they trade him at the draft.
I agree with you with regards to Gardiner, but he'll probably cost us over $6M/per and will get closer to $7M during Free Agency.
He's this years JVR - great player, but TML can't afford to pay him what he wants/deserves.

Reilly on the right side is interesting, but then you're asking Reilly to play more conservative with Gardiner.
As for 3c and 7d idea, I agree with some of the above post that it's not ideal for a full season.
Dermott - Zaitsev would make a solid 2nd pair that might earn more shutdown minutes.
This really leaves the bottom pair minutes for 3 players.
I was under the impression that this formation was used when a team had 7 NHL defenders under contract (and could lose one to waivers).
Or, had 6 quality NHL D, and a young stud that needed NHL minutes before taking over a spot.

Simple Trade?
I agree that EDM is not trading Dri. The point I was trying to make is that both these teams have an elite player that has a large contract, and the return would not be ideal.
The trade is Karlsson for Dri, and Duschene for Klefbom to make the cap and position exchange, work. OTT gets a #1c and a top 2 D both with term and decent cap hit (great for a small market team). EDM gets a #1 D and #2c/#1winger who both have 2 years at a cheaper cap hit.
Would you rather Duschene/Hofman for Klefbom/Larsson? If EDM adds in Lucic, OTT adds Ryan. 2 for 2 seems easier than 10pieces for 10pieces.
