Unless some team offers Marner $12M he should try to score as many points as possible, look loyal, and like a strong team mate. Staying in Toronto on Matthews wing solves all this without up rooting his life.
I think LA is more interested in Ulllmark, Saros, and Markstrom if they make a big swing. But they really can’t do anything until Byfield is extended.</div></div>
100%, I know Ullmark is priority #1, Byfield is priority #2.
I think you underestimate the situation in Toronto. If Marner is in the lineup he will get booed every time he touches the puck, he will be harassed in the streets, slandered in the press.
Unless he puts up 100+ points AND contributes significantly in the playoffs his value will be lower this time next year than it is now.
Unless he thinks there is a chance of getting an extension in Toronto or he really loves the city enough to be in a one sided relationship, his best move is to leave Toronto.
Where to is a whole different conversation. Personally I think if LA is offering an extension that he thinks is fair that it's a great option.
I just don't see traditional choices like Vegas, Florida, Tampa being options for him.
But I'm purely speculating. Your points are taken and are definitely well founded.

I'd love to see Niemela get games. I'm such a big fan of his, he has been excellent with the Marlies every step of the way. Kokkonen received high praise under Keefe, but LD is a complete log jam. I think Webber would fill in as an LD replacement before Kokkonen. Chadwick will probably not touch NHL ice next season, and same goes for Villeneuve who was very disappointing this season.</div></div>

If you are all looking for a name most fan won't know who is going to impact the Leafs next year the answer is Jacob Quillan. He is higher on the center depth chart than Minten (not as high of potential but closer to reaching his).
I'd be shocked if he didn't get some games in the NHL and wouldn't be surprised if he got a job out of camp or earned a place on the roster during the season.
Out of the names you provided, Webber will be the 7-9th D so likely to get games. Niemla could honestly be traded, he isn't going to be a stud and even if he hit his potential today he's at best a Lili replacement if Lili flops. But he could get games if he's in the organization.

I think this is changing soon but when I was working with LA. Bergevin was the closest/most senior advisor to Rob.
He is a big believer in chasing superstars and making big moves to keep a locker room on their toes.
Logically you are correct. I'm not sure if the LA front office will take your approach however. In some ways to them there is inherent value in change. That's why they keep making big moves each summer. I wouldn't expect this summer to be different and Marner is the biggest name just like Fiala and Dubois before him.

You can't buyout a player mid season. You can terminate them but you need a legal reason or you can mutually terminate (not happening cause he has to forfeit all the money on the deal).

Numerous accounts from within Detroit's organization are that Hronek was traded because he refused to consider an extension that wasn't equivalent to what Seider would get.
In short the amount of money he wanted made a team move off a #2/3 26y old RHD, one of the most sought after assets in the league that they were forced to try and replace with Justin Holl in free agency.
This is all to say that unless the culture shift in Vancouver has really impacted the way they Hronek operates, he will take the Canucks to the cleaners and demand his money or sign an offer sheet.

Doughty’s 5v5 expected goal share would be the highest of his career at 57.64%, according to Evolving Hockey. He leads the Kings blueliners in 5v5 relative expected goal share (on-ice xGF% – off-ice xGF%) and on-ice Corsi at 57.59% during 5v5 play, according to MoneyPuck.com.

And man you say you worked for an NHL FO, claimed to be talking with NHL executives left and right but Kings fans and others fans have questioned it numerous times on your ACGM's which is making me very doubtful anything said is legit past and present. As why would a person who claims to be a "Former NHL Executive" be on CF of all places and make questionable posts and not good trades of all things using unprofessional arguments and speech to justify things. Should have the knowledge to know thats not correct in the hockey or real world. I'm sorry I try not to post in a critical way but you are insulting someone with a crazy level or arrogance when you are so wrong it's not even funny.
Roy gets the majority of D zone starts for LA. He is on PK1, he is out in the last minute.
Doughty is not a defensive D. It's the equivalent of playing Morgan Rielly in the last minute when up by 1 goal. It's not a winning strategy.
Having worked for Rob, I would be shocked if he went into the season with Doughty, Spence, Clarke. If they did that I wouldn't be surprised if they were nowhere near playoff contention, it would be a disaster.
Which of the three they move I'm not sure. It's definetly not Doughty. Spence likely fetches a 2nd or 3rd in a Durzi type trade and can be replaced by DeMelo/Desharnais/Tanev or any other DFD. That is likely the plan.
But to say Clarke is untouchable is absurd. Pretty much every insider reported at the deadline that he was on the table. LA fans don't want him to move cause he has Erik Karlsson type potential but as the other poster said, those fans don't understand the current window has 1-3 years.
There isn't a window in 5 years from now. Dubois killed that. If they still had Byfield/Dubois(as a 1C)/Fiala/Spence/Clarke/Andersson after Doughty/Kopitar left then he would be untouchable.
Now they have nobody to play down the middle and no goalie. It's too many holes to consider that a window. Kings will either retool (highly unlikely) or go all in next year.
The Fiala for Saros/Marner for Clarke suggestions isn't far off from what LA management is actually thinking. Ulmark is their goalie target but I can see them trading a winger for Ulmark then trading Clarke for Marner. That would make them an instant top contender next season.

Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 7 - Shambles
Just throwing it out there that a few "insiders" I've spoken to have mentioned that they believe Mark Hunter is the leading GM candidate for both Edmonton (Holland is retiring) and Columbus.
Apparently he has recently been telling both teams that Marner would be a part of his strategy and given Marner's NMC that he feels he could get him cheap.
Pretty well known that Hunter put his job on the line to draft Mitch in Toronto and remains really close to Mitch and his family.
One person went as far as to say that the best case for Toronto might be if he goes to Columbus and they draft Sam Dickinson (London Knight) in which case Jirick and/or Mateychuck could become available in a Marner trade.
Also has someone say that they wouldn't be surprised if Hunter and Mitch worked together to hardball the Leafs including forcing Cowan into any Marner deal.

Pure speculation as to how Toronto would use him but I don't think it's far fetched to see him as a primary target for them. He can play 3RD and QB the PP. Unless they sell out for Montour or go for a Barrie/Ghost type player they will struggle to find a PP QB. Even though he is young Clarke can definitely still QB an NHL PP, he has an elite shot and offensive IQ.

Byfield contract was just to fill out the roster. Complete guess on my part without looking at the details.
Re roster, most teams run a 21/22 team roster but I also didn't do the work to get Marner down to $3.7M which is what he said they were looking at internally. At that cap hit he seemed to see Byfield or Clarke as the primary piece of the return. Clarke being more expendable.

Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 7 - Shambles
I know people here doubt "insider takes" so feel free.to ignore if you want.
Been chatting with a few friends who work for the Leafs/MLSE.
From what I'm hearing they are considering four options:
1. Leave Shanny in charge and give him 2 seasons to see out his vision. They wouldn't let him trade any prospects of picks from the 2027 draft (or later). Idea is that he can run it back do whatever he feels will work and in 2 years if it's failing Matthews/Nylander/Marner are still young enough that their contracts can be moved and the team can tear it down.
2. Fire Shanny and leave Tre with the GM title but he and Pelley will split the President's job. Direction here would largely be a retool, moving out a few guys and try to win.
3. Blow it all up. There have been discussions about just a complete blow up including trading Matthews/Marner/Nylander/Rielly/Tavares. There are some people concerned that after Shanahan put his "team" in place he prioritized the people over the organization and that culture can't be changed without them all gone. This would essentially be what happened when Shanahan first came, wipe out the front office and start again.
4. Observation year. Pelley has only been on the job for 1.5 months. There is a thought that he might just let everything stay the same. Observe for a year then make decisions next year. This would mean no major moves without his approval, no big contracts, etc. but team stays the course for the most part unless he approves a big trade/UFA deal.
Seems like it's really all up in the air.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>"Fresh Ideas"?!?!? That's <strong>hilarious</strong>!! This is the fourth time today, and the <strong>NINTH</strong> time this month, that you've proposed the ridiculous inclusion of Brandt Clarke in a trade to Toronto (8 times for Marner and once for Nylander), and on each of the earlier occasions, received unanimous opposition to the idea of including Clarke in ANY trade.
But go ahead. Just put your head down and ignore every single reaction you get. It's a horrible, terrible, no-good, horrible idea for the Kings, but you don't want to listen to what you don't want to hear.</div></div>
Having worked for Rob I can say with 100% certainty he would accept this deal if it was offered and Marner came with an extension of 4-8y at $11.5M or less.
It would immediately erase the PLD disaster, buy him another season as GM and solve the RHD problem he has.
Kings fans genuinely have no understanding of the game. You can't have Doughty, Spence and Clarke as your RHD. None of them are solid enough defensively and all of them will take time away from each other in offensive situations.
I think Kings fans so don't realize how much power guys like Kopitar/Doughty have. They are a large reason for the Fiala/PLD moves which were completely unnecessary in an attempt to accelerate the rebuild.
Doughty doesn't want Clarke there and today the organization rather put Clarke in the AHL, press box or third pair than risk upsetting Doughty by giving Clarke real minutes.
So in short if you think this trade wouldn't be accepted I'd highly recommend taking some time to learn more about the game and the business. It's has to be one of the least educated and most absurd takes you can have. I'm quite certain many analysts have done their mock Marner trades and many have Clarke coming back to Toronto in an LA trade.
You sir aren't smarter than people who do this for a living.

I don't care about his offensive deficiencies. I'm saying he isn't even good defensively. Benoit, Lagesson and Liligren have significantly better defensive metrics.
He's 62nd percentile defensively. On any random team he'd be their 3rd best defensive D. When he brings no offense that means that at best he's likely a #4D realistically he's a #5/6. At $6.5M for 7 more years on the wrong side of 30 nobody should want him without a significant sweetener.

If you want to argue Hakanpaa's value that's fine or if you want to argue the fit with Dallas you can but Lili's value isn't really debatable. People were having these arguments a year ago and the Sandin trade shows that this is clearly the value of a young 2nd pairing D.
