A Scouts Proposed Marner Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MitchJr</b></div><div>What scout proposed this?</div></div>
Thanks for pointing out that in a typical senior moment, I forgot to hit "Save" after typing out the explanatory Team Description. It's Jason Bukala, the principal of The Pro Hockey Group, who does the scouting reports for CapFriendly. His detailed evaluation of all 26 Maple Leafs this past season are the 26 new scouting reports indicated by that red "26" in the top menu, and constitute the bulk of his long article that appeared on the MSN news crawl today. That article included an analysis of both the team with Marner, and the team without him plus a possible trade getting there. (The CF scouting reports are an abbreviated version of what he wrote about each player in the article.)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MitchJr</b></div><div>What scout proposed this? Absolutely ridiculous:
1/ Marner waives - in a contract year - to play for the worst team in the league 🙄
2/ nothing of interest for the Leafs; Ferraro is undersized and plays the wrong side
3/ Leafs adding Liljegren & Robertson confirms this so called scout is just a troll</div></div>
I wouldn't say that he's a troll, because apparently CF treats him as legitimate, but the reason I posted this is precisely because my reaction is the same as yours. To me, even if Marner <strong>were</strong> to waive his NMC (which I doubt just on a general basis), I refuse to believe that it would be to go to San Jose, a team that is no more likely to do better next season with Celebrini than Chicago did this season with Bedard. And it's way heavy on the Toronto side in any event.

Gibson won't go to Toronto (we've been through this), Anaheim won't be trading McTavish, Anaheim has no use for Hildeby with four goaltenders under contract in the pipeline already, Anaheim doesn't need another bottom-6 forward from outside with all of the prospects trying to be promoted, and Anaheim doesn't need another 6/7 defenseman from outside with 7 defenders under team control for next season already and Pat Verbeek trying to add a top-4 RhD. The Ducks might give you a package for Marner like the one proposed by Jason Bukala of The Pro Hockey Group today -- the Edmonton first, Olen Zellweger (blasphemy to my fellow Anaheim stalwarts, but it is Mitch Marner, after all) and another roster player like Isac Lundestrom -- but that's about it.

Welcome to CapFriendly. Sometimes, it's not too friendly.
Since this is your first effort, you're probably unaware that this very trade, either exactly or something very similar to it, has been proposed dozens of times, and always by Habs fans only. We're not convinced that Sean Farrell is an impact player in the NHL, a LhD (no matter how highly you value him) as a major element of a Trevor Zegras trade is unappealing given that we have even greater strength and depth there than you do, and the Winnipeg first doesn't have much wow factor when we own the Edmonton first. Our standing ask for Zegras remains the same: a quality right-handed forward prospect like Owen Beck or Filip Mesar plus your 2024 first-round draft pick. If that seems high, understand that contrary to popular but misguided rumor, Zegras isn't on the block and it would take a high-quality, high-value offer to get him. We're perfectly willing to keep him as one of our top 6 for the rest of the decade.

Trade the picks
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>knowerofpuck</b></div><div>The 15th overall pick could be anything! It could even be someone as good as Trevor Zegras!</div></div>
It could, for example, be someone who could eventually turn into an $8.7 million first-line center.
But there's no guarantee, hence the need to hedge the bet.

Homer is as homer does.
I've never seen Danielson play but I've seen every single NHL game that Zegras has played, so I think I have a pretty fair idea of what his value is, which is squarely in line with what my fellow Ducks fans as well as several rational fans of other teams think.

upgrade----gt2025
I'm not a fan of any of these moves.
I doubt that the upgrade from Moore to Necas (if any, given that the local boy was our leading goal scorer this year and excellent defensively) is worth the almost 80% increase in cap hit.
Our best LhD for a first and a prospect RD (as good a prospect as he is) leaves us with two rookies on the right side and more than double the cap hit to bring in Werenski, whom neither he nor Columbus will agree to move.
Danault and Spence for futures -- like the Anderson trade -- is a surrender to the belief that the team won't compete for another two seasons.
Basically, what you've done here is traded away three valuable top-quality veterans in their prime for one younger first-line player and exchanged the experienced Jordan Spence for the untried Scott Morrow, thereby seriously weakening our defense and postponing our window of contention from now to the future. Moreover, since the first trade shouldn't happen, the Werenski trade could only occur with our own 2024 and 2026 firsts, which isn't acceptable even if Columbus and Werenski himself were so inclined.
The only "upgrade" I see here is signing Dakota Joshua, but I think that you're at least 10% short of what he's going to go for.

The Athletic recommended Markstrom trade
I saw an article today that appeared on the MSN news crawl credited to a scout that was a detailed year-end analysis of the entire Toronto roster. I didn't think to make a note of the author's name but when I opened up CapFriendly this morning lo and behold, his individual analyses are the 26 new scouting reports that appeared on the site. So here's his proposed Marner trade:
Mitch Marner, Timothy Liljegren and Nick Robertson to San Jose for Filip Bystedt, Mario Ferraro and the Vegas 2025 first that the Sharks own (because the trade has to occur after July 1)
I would post an ACGM on this if I knew the name of the guy who thought it up.

Kent Fishing
If that's Kent fishing, he's gonna pull up a waterlogged boot on the end of his line, because that's not a package that will land any top-6 forward in the NHL. Doesn't the fact that you want him to play on your second line register with you? You wouldn't trade Alex Newhook for that $h!t, and Zegras has already shown that he's a better player.

Just because it's a buy low opportunity for Detroit doesn't make it a sell low motivation for Anaheim. Zegras isn't on the market, so it would take at least Nate Danielson and the pick to tempt Verbeek.

LaCombe cost Anaheim fans
There are some interesting possibilities here. The same pick swap is available in the second round because we have the Boston pick. Also, we're lacking a 2025 second, so yours for our 2025 third is an idea. I think that you would have to add a little in a pick swap. If we're talking about straight value,
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Manson</b></div><div>Maybe a Second and a decent forward prospect.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>StDetroitBlueWings</b></div><div>2nd + Dylan Peterson or Tanner Dickenson?</div></div>
I don't know your team too well, but they might be right. Also, since those two prospects are centers, we'd look at Simon Robertsson and Marcus Sylvegard, because we're thin at RW. I know NOTHING about any of the four of them, so please don't be insulted if I've stumbled on your second-best forward prospect. But I think that LaCombe has definite second-pairing potential.

Getting what PLD got
1. Los Angeles can't afford Mitch Marner in 2024-2025.
2. Los Angeles doesn't need another top-2 RW with Adrian Kempe and Kevin Fiala there and Quinton Byfield and Trevor Moore at LW.
3. Los Angeles can't afford Mitch Marner in 2025-2026 and thereafter.
4. Los Angeles has only three players for the RD slots next season, and Brandt Clarke is one of them, so this trade creates a hole where there wasn't one before it.
5. As usual, this Marner trade only makes sense for the Maple Leafs. It's much harder than it seems to construct a trade that benefits the other team at a reasonable cost.

Wings BS
Welcome to CapFriendly. Sometimes, it's not too friendly.
Anaheim fans are convinced that Trevor Zegras is not on the market, no matter what the hopeful buzz is. So it would take a very serious offer to move him, including an impact player or prospect. Obviously, Lucas Raymond is out of the question, but none of those three players you've included in your offer here is that enticing. In my opinion, about the best fit with Detroit would be Nate Danielson and your 2024 first, or maybe Danielson, Marco Kasper and your 2025 second with something more from us. But since this is the first offer I can remember seeing from the Red Wings, there hasn't been much discussion about a Detroit trade for Z.

Sadness
SURE the Sabres are going to trade you three key elements of their future in exchange for one season of Mitch Marner.
Maybe the fact that concentrating 57.5% of the permissible cap in 5 players doesn't work -- a 6-year experiment that even the Toronto brain trust seems to have acknowledged has failed -- has escaped the Buffalo front office's attention, and now that Marner is a short-termer, Buffalo will take him off your hands and give you what you should have been assembling in the meantime.
Don't hold your breath.

TRADE FOR ZEGRAS DRAFT IGINLA PLUS DUBOIS TRADE
Neither player interests the Ducks very much, so I doubt that they pull the trigger on that offer.
The new regime in Arizona isn't trading away their first top-10 pick in their reign for a third-pairing defenseman, a drop of 20 places in the draft and a future shot in the dark which is more likely to be Florida's pick than Calgary's.
Los Angeles isn't retaining on Pierre-Luc DuBois. However bad you (or we) may think that the DuBois contract is, selling it while retaining on it makes it worse, not better, unless the return is decent, not $h!t.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>shucket</b></div><div>What I don’t understand look at the haul Dubois got, and Marner is gonna be traded for nothing?</div></div>
What you don't understand is that there's a third theory governing Marner trades, which is the one to which most of us outside Leafs Nation subscribe: in addition to (1) Marner should get what you think he's worth, and (2) Marner is going to get a lot less than what you think he's worth, there's (3): Marner isn't going to get what you think he's worth because almost teams can't afford it, i.e., <strong>he'll cost too much</strong>.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>shucket</b></div><div>People think since he has a NMC and gets to pick where he wants to go he holds no value. If he’s available 31 teams will try and make it work and you’ll be surprised the amount of assets they give up for him when they do.</div></div>
(1) That's not what most people think, in large part because (2) very few people think that Marner holds no value. On the contrary: the reason why people decline proposed Marner trades, 9 times out of 10, it's because the cost of paying to acquire him is too high. That's because he's the inevitable result of the by-now-discredited theory of constructing a roster by concentrating a gigantic and inordinate amount of cap space in a very few ultra-high-quality assets.
