(NJD/WPG) - Toffoli for 2025 2nd (WPG), 2024 3rd (WPG)
It's just a dumb thing to do. Too often the team giving up the blue-chip prospect ends up regretting it. Nobody wants to be Washington in the next Forsberg for Erat trade

(NJD/WPG) - Toffoli for 2025 2nd (WPG), 2024 3rd (WPG)
Wow, this deadline has been a real buyer's market. I don't think there's been a single deal that can be considered an undisputed overpay which I feel like is guaranteed to happen 2-3 times each deadline.

(WSH/CAR) - Kuznetsov for 2025 3rd (CAR)
I think the Canes are the best team for Kuzy to turn it around. Rod the Bod is going to be demanding, but the team defence is strong enough that I think they can cover up for some of Kuzy's deficiencies while allowing him a chance to get the offensive mojo back. If it doesn't work, the buyout isn't the end of the world. They could even pay a Chicago to take on the buyout for them in the summer a la Josh Bailey if needed.

I think this is the move that will put the Blue Jackets over the top. Subban is the defenseman they've always needed.

Chicago Blackhawks signed Petr Mrázek (2 Years / $4,250,000 AAV)
It's a different approach but I'm interested to see how it pans out for KD. For a team like this, cap space is at a surplus and that won't be changing between now and the next two seasons. Once Bedard is due for his mega-deal that he will ultimately get at the end of his ELC, these deals will be coming off the books. I think there's something understated about stability in a teams personnel. Being a bad team team is one thing, but being a bad team destined to be a revolving doors of players likely doesnt build much in the way of team culture or commitment. I honestly could see Chicago taking some big steps forward in the next 1-2 seasons.

Edmonton Oilers signed Corey Perry (1 Year / $1,100,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>drewjenkins</b></div><div>Perry should be a good addition for Edmonton this season.
But the Oilers are really piling on the dead cap next year:
$3,850,000 = Campbell (Buried)
Honestly, next year's cap can be figured out next year. If there has ever been a time to "go for it" it is now. You have McDrai in their primes, the team is the deepest it's been since the McDrai era started, and they seem to finally have figured everything out after a ****ty start. Time to go all-in and hope for the best.
$3,225,000 = Browny (Bonus)
$1,920,000 = Nealy (Buyout)
$ - 325,000 = Perry (Bonus)
-------------------------------------
<strong>$9,320,000</strong> = <strong>Total Costs</strong>
Buying out Campbell can reduce it by $2,100,000 though.
But they'll be hit with a $1,750,000 penalty for 6 years.
Maybe they'll trade Campbell with picks / prospects?</div></div>

Toronto Maple Leafs signed William Nylander (8 Years / $11,500,000 AAV)
In a vacuum, this is a good deal just based on what Nylander brings to the table. He is worth the money and should continue to be through most of the contract. The last few years won't be as bad with the higher cap as well.
The problem is the structure of this team. I just don't think you can give 4 players 50% of the money and ice a complete roster. I have the feeling the Delta between JT+Marner now compared to JT+Marner with their upcoming extensions won't be much, if anything. JT will see his pay come down, I honestly don't know what a 'fair' number will look like, and Marner will go up. Probably something around 13-14 million/year. So even if JT takes 6-8 million on the next deal, the core four will still cost around 50% of the cap.

Buffalo Sabres signed Rasmus Dahlin (8 Years / $11,000,000 AAV)
This deal takes him from age 24-31, so it covers his entire prime. $11 million is a big number, but with the growing cap and how good Dahlin has become, it's worth it. The Sabres are locking this team in and I think it's going to pay off.

Calgary Flames signed Mikael Backlund (2 Years / $4,500,000 AAV)
It seems like a fair deal for what Backlund brings. It's also more important than just the boxcars and AAV. Keeping Backlund should encourage guys like Lindholm and Hanafin to consider resigning. If the lost Backlund the team would lose a big part of it's identity and they're having a hard enough time figuring out what that identity is in the first place

My hot take, Bouchard is gonna be top-10 in Norris voting this year. With the PP1 spot and more minutes with a solid partner in Ekholm, I see him having a huge year. Something along the lines of 65-70 points while being defensively solid in bigger minutes.

As for the player himself, this feels a little high. He's got injury issues, but when he's in the lineup he's great. 50 points in 69 games. I don't think he's the goal scorer he used to be with just 18 goals last year. Really confused as to why they didn't just re-sign Cat.</div></div>
Did you miss the part where Debrincat said he wouldn't re-sign in Ottawa? LOL

That's what I'm not getting. Arizona is doing the same thing but only over 1-2 years. Doing contracts like this and Gudas over 3-4 years is signalling that cap space isn't important to them in that time frame, which to me at least, means they don't see themselves being super competitive until what 2028?

Crazy overpay, but a team that hasn't even hit the floor yet can afford it. Still, they might not like this contract in year 3 if they're hoping to be competitive again by then

If he doesn't perform then the AAV is low. If he performs well, the AAV is worth it. Very astute signing by KH to capitalize on the performance bonus clause for LTIR players

Great Signing by NYR. Wheels has caught a lot of flack for being 'toxic' in the lockerroom, but the only thing I've ever heard bad about him is that he holds people to a high standard and his teammates don't like being called out for being lazy

A good signing. JVR still has some gas in the tank and when put in the right role he should be able to succeed. He can't be your 1st line winger anymore, but as a middle six option he should excel. For just 1 year and 1 million, not much can go wrong here.

I think this is $50,000 too much. at $1,150,000 they can bury the whole contract in the AHL. If he ends up being the third-stringer, they're going to have $50,000 against the cap.

a 7th is worth it to secure an NHL asset that you want. If a contender came around with a really good pitch on July 1st and offered him 1-1.5 million, he might take it before even considering CHI's offer. this lets them get their foot in the door first and make sure they get what they want.
