totally unrealistic d upgrades
Petry has played really well for the Habs. Would he be available for a player like Hornqvist? Maybe. Emelin's play has improved this year, also. How much of that is due to playing as a pairing? Hard to say. Cole isn't a top pairing D, but he should be fine on the second pair ... especially with MT as his coach. I think part of Cole's issues stem from Agnew, both in St. Louis and then with the Pens.
The Pens absolutely do not have to keep Kunitz. While his more recent play has been better, he's no spring chicken. He's clearly declining, and if we can upgrade his spot now, all the better. The Blues have zero need for Hornqvist. They don't really need Kunitz either, but he could slot into their 3LW spot. Mostly it's about cap space on the Pens end, and a lack of forward prospects we'd be willing to trade. The main piece in that deal would be Pouliot, and the only reason I'd be willing to trade him is because adding JBo would lock up the LHD for a couple of years.
The Ducks are rumored to be shopping Vatanen. Whether or not that trade gets it done, well, 'unrealistic' was part of the thread title :) The Ducks have no use for Cole. They really don't need Lovejoy, per say, but with Despres out indefinitely, he gives them a short term solution to the Fowler pairing since the two had some chemistry before. I don't really want to give Bonino up, but Fehr works just as well as a 3C. I think Perron has enough value that a pick shouldn't be needed since we'd be adding Bones and taking back a $4M player in Hagelin who isn't fitting into their system at all. Hagelin may not work with Sid either ... maybe we can send him to NYR for Etem if he doesn't work out :)
But, back to Kunitz ... I just don't understand why folks think he's that important. I'm not being snarky here ... I'm genuinely puzzled. Kunitz has been playing better with Sid recently, but the guy is in decline. If we acquired Hagelin, that would bump Kunitz into the bottom 6, where he's killed every line he's been on. Plus, as far as the bottom 6 goes, we have younger. less expensive options to replace him in house. Like Simon.

Kunitz doesn't have the wheels to keep up with Crosby and Kessel. Duper does, but he'll need some time to readjust after having been out so long. His lack of hands wouldn't be a detriment since he can also do all the little things that would give those two the space they need. So there's that as a fall back plan. Not that I really want to see Duper in the top six, since I think he'd bring more to the team on the third line.
Plots is hardly a rookie, and is already adjusting to the smaller ice. He looks better every game. So, that just leaves Sprong ... who I admitted already is a bit of a wild card. If he hits the wall in terms of play, one of Bonino, Fehr or BB can slide up if need be.
Personally, I'd prefer to keep Perron and Horny but there are two things. First, the writing is clearly on the wall as to how the FO views Perron. Second, we are not going to get very far with our current D group. If we still had Despres, things would be very different, but we don't and our D is weak. Yes, we have three of the highest scoring players in the league on the team ... and we're going to need them to produce to cover for all the goals the other team is going to be scoring. Flower is great, but he's human and can only do so much. The FO may be able to swing an upgrade on D using Perron as the centerpiece for a trade, but I don't know if the value is there to get a legit 2nd pairing D. I'm reasonably certain, however that Horny does.
So, in this scenario, I'm basically swapping Perron for a top six LHS and getting rid of the Rev, then using Horny to acquire a legit second pairing D in Shattenkirk. That leaves us with a top six that may not have as much NLH experience, but isn't lacking in skill and a capable defense. As for Kunitz, now is the time to move him, while he still has some value and we have internal options to replace him.

How does it make the Pens better? Check out that second pairing on D. Plots will fill a similar role on Geno's line that Horny would have. Sprong is a bit of a wild card, true, but he can fill that sniper role that Neal once did. Sundqvist is ready for the NHL, as is Simon. Any difference in this forward group than what we actually have would be made up for by a much improved D. Well, except for Sarge. He should probably retire, but he can potentially mentor Pooh and would be the spare D.
I don't think I'm undervaluing Kunitz at all. His play is clearly declining. It was obvious last year, despite all of the talk about an iron deficiency. That he will continue to be gifted a top 6 spot only hurts the Pens.

let's be reality here
Would Buffalo trade for Scuderi? Would Scuderi accept a trade to Buffalo? I don't know, really. I know they need a vet LHD, and Byslma is certainly familiar with him. He's not as young as they'd want, but he could fit into a mentoring capacity while being serviceable on their bottom pair. Foligno is being pushed down the depth chart, for sure, and has been mentioned other places as being potential trade bait. Scuderi for Foligno makes sense, at least on paper. But, have to agree, I'd take a dilly bar for Scuderi at this point :)
As for Franson, I'm kind of on the fence about him. I like his offensive skill set, but his skating is a real concern. I wouldn't mind finding a RHD for the second pairing and pushing Cole down to the third, but I'm not sure Franson is the right fit for the team's system.

He'll get at least $5M, so $6M is probably an over payment, but I figured I'd err on the side of too much rather than too little.
