Having fun with the Kane rumor
I know you are just having fun with it, but I think 3 top lines would be the way to go. Kane anchoring his own line and then just an absolutely insane powerplay unit. Would be too much fun to watch so it will never happen.

Dump zucker
I think we just endure one more year of Zuck. He's proven to be fairly decent when he's healthy and if he gets hurt you LTIR him and spend his cap hit. It's not as bad a scenario to be in now that he only has one year left on his deal.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Haymaker26</b></div><div>I don't actually think Jason Zucker is even a cap dump. We won't be getting anywhere near what we paid for him, but his production in Pittsburgh hasn't actually been that much lower than his typical season from Minnesota. He played 456 games with minnesota, scoring 132 goals and 243 points. That's an average of about 24 goals and 44 points every 82 games. In 94 games with Pittsburgh, Zucker has 23 goals and 47 points. Yeah, I get it, he gets paid more than we'd like and his injury luck has sucked. That definitely lowers his value. But it doesn't lower his value into the negatives.
Other than that, rumor is Malkin was asking for a deal around $6.6 mil, and I don't think Domi is worth $5 mil unless the Pens essentially get into a bidding war over him.</div></div>
It's unfortunate because if Zucker could just stay healthy he would be a decent fit and certainly wouldn't be worth the assets it takes to move him out. Dude just can't stay healthy for the life of him and that liability is going to keep anyone in any potential position of competing from taking on his contract. Seems like a great dude too, just super unhealthy.

I'd love to see the Penguins sell Marino while he still has perceived value. They did it with Goligoski and it worked out tremendously. I don't think he's bad, I just think the trade value outweights what he brings to the ice right now.

Pettersson/Seider would be a solid pairing. People sleep on Pettersson but he's solid on both ends of the ice. Seider's physicality would help Pettersson's game quite a bit.

New lines
Keep Heinen with Malkin, Zuck with Carter. McGinn plays the Carter wing until Zucker is healthy and Boyle stays on the 4th line.

Cheap depth. We lost someone on the left side and had two right handed depth defensemen as our 3rd pairing.

2nd line Wingers Or 3C
The team doesn't have many weaknesses right now, but the 2nd line's ability to score is one and getting production out of Erod is another. Both could be solved simply by moving Carter to Malkin's line and letting Erod anchor the 3rd line. Once Teddy comes back the current 4th line ceases to exist and McGinn goes back to Teddy and a healthy Zucker goes to the Erod line. No trades necessary.

Kapanen is most likely gone before or at the deadline
Seattle is going to have a boatload of cash next offseason and McCann is still an RFA. I think they just stick with the guy potting them 20 goals and give him a contract the Penguins would never be able to afford.

TDL trades that get us ready for the playoffs
I'd like to see what Erod/Zucker/Heinen can do leading up to TDL. Having Carter on Geno's wing takes away a lot of Geno's center liabilities and Carter has looked a bit weak centering his own line at times this season. Seems like they could complement each other really well so long as that 3rd line can also produce.

sooo the opening night lineup
Blueger probably plays with ZAR and McGinn. I think Angello also makes the most sense as 4C but who knows. Seems like a depth center may have been the piece that was needing to be added, so there must be some kind of plan there until Malkin gets back.

Cap Relief
What's the point without filling those holes with players that are at least equal, but hopefully better? At this point you can't fill those roles through FA so are you expected to be handed players for free via trade or to give up future assets for guys who may play just as well as Zucker, Pettersson, and 8th d-man Riikola? Doesn't make much sense to me.

ZAR signed
With any luck Carter and Zucker stay healthy while Geno is out and form some chemistry that can remain together for the rest of the reason in a scoring threat 3rd line. Keep Malkin with Kapanen and try every option possible on left wing (I'd say including Jake). I think there's good cases to be made for McGinn, Heinen and Rodriquez to all step into that role depending on whoever performs best. Run Blueger with ZAR and the 4th line shakes itself out.
I think people are a little bit too dramatic about all the necessary changes needed to the roster. If you aren't improving upon Pettersson or Zucker without giving up massive assets then what's the point? They had bad years, they can bounce back. Jarry had a bad year, he can bounce back. Pettersson will likely have a new everyday partner, could make a big difference.

Perfect Offseason
ANA certainly isn't adding a pick here. I think you need one more big piece on the Penguins side. Zucker has both pros and cons for ANA so there really isn't much value there. He offers scoring now, but they need future scoring too. Probably 2022 1st round pick and top offensive prospect (Poulin) makes the most sense without touching a roster forward, besides Zucker.

I wonder if Zucker could be worked into a Vegas deal. They shed the MAF cap hit, add a top-6 forward while the Penguins get their 1B and shed some space as well. Vegas still retains but maybe not as much.

When did Rielly to the Penguins become popular? Literally the last thing the Penguins need, with trading goaltending being a very close second.

big off season with young guys
Penguins are in a weird spot. Cost-wise Matheson should be playing top 4 minutes and based on his play deserved top 4 minutes last year. Pettersson is still quite young and has room to grow. When Dumoulin went down he was easily our best replacement for top pairing minutes next to Letang. That goes to show what he could do on a team in need of a top 4 guy that isn't quite ready to compete yet, but wants a core group to grow together.
I'd honestly rather not trade Pettersson. There is too much value in a battle tested young defenseman, signed for good term on a <strong>cap friendly</strong> contract. POJ looks decent but he's kind of a string bean.

Penguins have $12M tied up on left defense. Not to say Rielly wouldn't be an upgrade but they'd have to find a way to move Matheson, which is very unlikely.

Jake to Edmonton Take Two
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>edeangel84</b></div><div>The people calling for his head were the same ones defending Bylsma. Now we see it again, Sully is great but he was let down by goaltending... nonsense. The guy doesn’t make adjustments. And the forecheck? Huh? The forechecking was on the other side of the ice when they absolutely blitzed our D in our own third of the ice. We had a lot of shots on net and Sorokin saw the vast majority of them because almost none of our forwards like to go to the front of the net</div></div>
I too wish he would have made some adjustments to the forward lines. There wasn't much to be done defensively, so I give him some lee-way there and people saying Legace should have been put in net are out of their minds. Maybe you make a goalie change after the 4th goal game 6, but still the damage was done at that point. Sully needed to get Jake and Rust away from the Pelech/Pulock pairing but he was too hardheaded to take Jake off of Sid's wing and Jake drowned the entire series as a result. Easily his worst showing of his career.
I think it makes sense to bring Sullivan back for another year. This is a team that had no consistency on the blueline all year, a huge question mark in net, and basically an entire new cast of forwards trying to mesh together with constant injuries that finished at the top of the toughest division in the league and I would agree with hockeyfanatic outplayed a very good Isles team in most ways in the first round. Their young goalie stole the show and our young goalie **** the bed. It was optimistic to rely on an unproven young netminder to anchor the last remaining open window of the Crosby/Malkin era but at the same time we just got done watching Murray do it, and so maybe that's what fueled it. Either way this offseason has to be about solidifying the net, having a better option than Legace or DeSmith to turn to in the playoffs if a situation like this happens in the future.
