Note: Reports prior to Sept 2023 were originally graded out of ten, and also included additional categories that have been merged into the current categories.
This likely results in the overall ratings prior to 2023 being decreased in comparison to reports since Sept 2023.

For an `Apples to Apples` comparison between players, we recommend only comparing reports before, or after, Sept 2023.
Results will average out accordingly as more data is accumulated.

Smith has averaged 16:00 TOI over the course of the season in Pittsburgh. In his first 47GP he chipped in with 10G - 13A. He's used in all situations and continues to skate at NHL pace. His role on the PK is second unit. Play driver at times. Shooter on the PP. Generally responsible defensively, but like all players he has moments where he could be more dialed in. Not a ton of physicality with his game (34 hits - 12 shot blocks) Streaky. Signed through 24/25. Cap hit $5.0 million. Ten team no trade clause this year - drops to eight teams next season. L3
Smith's ice time, and role with the Penguins, has ranged at times this season. His overall TOI has averaged 16:16 for the year - 13:30 at ES and 1:45 on the PP. He generally doesn't see the ice on the penalty-kill, but coming out of the break he was used as a depth PK versus Winnipeg. Smith skates well, he can be a threat off the rush on occasion, sets up net-front/middle bumper on the PP and the ability to provide better than secondary scoring. His 8G-12A in his first 41GP with the Pens is less than ideal for what the organization was hoping to get out of Smith. Good release. Generally aggressive directing pucks on net when he sees a lane. Doesn't provide a ton of push back physically - only credited with 23 hits and 11 shot blocks. Signed through 24/25. Contract carries a $5.0M AAV that is armed with a 10 team no trade list this season - and an 8 team not trade list in the final year. Leaning third-line forward more than second line forward at this stage of his career.Feb. 6, 2024Feb. 7, 2024
Jesse PuljujärviLogo of the Pittsburgh PenguinsRW252 of 2

L3
Puljujarvi was averaging 17 minutes of ice time in the AHL, including a primary role on the power-play where he averaged 3 minutes per game. He got off to a slow start, going scoreless in his first four games, before contributing 4G-5A in his last nine games played. Has produced offense in a variety of ways in Wilkes-Barre. He's scored from the weak-side flank on the power-play and found pucks around the crease area to deposit in the net. He's been using his big frame (6'4 201lbs) to his advantage when boxing out opponents. He's also moving well in open ice. He's shown he can pull away from opponents, in open ice, and take pucks to the net off the rush. Average / Average plus detail defensively. There are moments in games he gets caught watching the player with the puck in the defensive zone and loses track of his check in the process. Feb. 3, 2024Feb. 6, 2024

In a ten game segment from December 17th - January 6th - Bunting scored 3G-4A - His TOI ranged from 12:00 - 17:00 depending on special teams All of his TOI comes at ES and PP. He doesn't PK in Carolina. Generally playing to the same identity. A third line / second line forward on any given night. Energetic. On the edge. Hasn't had the same, game to game, impact in Carolina as he had in Toronto. Defensive awareness / commitment off the puck ranges.Jan. 5, 2024Jan. 7, 2024

L2
Yager was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round (14th) at the 2023 NHL draft. Over the course of his WHL career he has shown the ability to produce offense a variety of ways. In his rookie season he displayed a 'shoot first' approach in the offensive zone. Last season he flipped the script and started to distribute the puck / become more of a play maker. This year, he is best described as a hybrid of both styles. Before leaving for Team Canada camp, Yager had produced 17G-24A in 28GP. His overall game is quicker and faster. He can be a threat off the rush and has the legs to check back all the way to his goal line when he exits the offensive zone late. Yager goes about his business in a responsible way. He doesn't cut corner to produce offense.Dec. 19, 2023Dec. 22, 2023

Ryan GravesLogo of the Pittsburgh PenguinsLD282 of 2

P2
Graves is a perfect example of a player who compliments his defensive partner. He skates along side Kris Letang. Graves is a '2-way / Defensive D', whereas Letang is a 'Transitional D'. Letang is a play maker who is willing to lead and join the rush. Graves is the kind of player who takes stock of what his partner is doing and keeps the play in front of him / takes less risk. If the Pens are going to make it back to playoffs this year, they will depend heavily on a player like Graves. He matches up against top lines. He's one of the first defenders rolling over the boards on the penalty-kill. The coaching staff can trust his detail off important defensive zone draws. Watch Graves closely. His spatial awareness (head on a swivel taking stock of what's happening around him) is fantastic. He's always aware. He moves well for a big man. His long reach keeps opponents to the perimeter. He doesn't go out of his way looking for a big hit. When the timing is right he closes the gap physically. Graves rotates / fronts the play very well. He gets in shooting lanes to block shots. A defender his size is difficult to make plays 'around' He's averaging 21:28 TOI - 18:54 ES - 0:00 PP - 2:33 PK. All of his minutes are hard minutes.Oct. 24, 2023Oct. 28, 2023

Generally plays with enough detail in his zone. Solid middle of the lineup / at times top 6 player.Mar. 1, 2022Jul. 12, 2022

Cruz ended his 2021-2022 season on a positive note at the World U18 Championships in Germany. He contributed 2g-5a-7pts in 6gp. He is the kind of player that might have played a higher role in the lineup if not for some of the other talented forwards on Team USA. Cruz has decent size and strength. He moves well and solid offensive tools. He handles the puck, can transport it between the blue lines, and has a good release. In time he could develop into a secondary scoring option at the NHL levelMar. 27, 2022Jul. 2, 2022

Represented Canada at the U18 Worlds after his season ended in Swift Current. At the Worlds he was deployed in all situations and part of their leadership group. Owen brings size. skates well, is capable of producing better than secondary offense and has room for more weight and strength. A 2-way 'D' who does possess a transitional element. He is not likely to be a first pairing PP 'D' as a pro. Owen has the type of game to compliment a risk taking partner. He projects to be a top 4 NHL defenceman.Apr. 23, 2022Jul. 1, 2022

Nolan was deployed as a middle pairing 'D' for Team Canada at the World U18 Championships in Germany. He's an average defender He competes but has, at times, difficulty keeping opponents in front of him and positioning himself appropriately. Especially around his crease. On occasion he does show the ability to slip off a check and make an outlet. At this time he projects to be a 2-way D. There isn't an elite or exceptionally poor element in his game. Good size. Moves fine.Apr. 23, 2022Jul. 1, 2022

His performance in the Top Prospects Game should increase his stock. Partnered with ('Mateychuk'). They complimented each other. A 2-way 'D' with sneaky ability with the puck. Made several (small area) plays. Launched the attack with accurate outlets. Moves well. Long reach is an asset. Doesn't back down. Identified and executed. Smart. Reliable IQ.Feb. 2, 2022Mar. 25, 2022

There is no question this player benefits from playing with (#34) but he has to be recognized for his contribution and the way he goes about his business. Tenacious competitor with good skill. It has taken some time to arrive at the NHL level. He's making the most out of the opportunity. He's a bit of a greasy player who will get under the skin of opponents. Being used at ES and on the PP. Complimentary skill. Not the kind of player who can carry a line offensively.Mar. 13, 2022Mar. 14, 2022

Keeps the play in front of him. Knows when to join the rush and when to stay back and play it safe. Distributes well. Has a plan. Outlets are accurate and hard. Tall / Rangy defender who is getting his feet wet at the college level taking regular shift Long reach is an asset Loads of room for more muscle / weight Not shy in the trenches. He will lean on opponents. Displays the ability to contain and win 1/1 battles in his zone A developing prospect who leans 2-way 'D' and has enough game to occasionally join the rush and pinch down to keep pucks alive in the offensive zone.Nov. 27, 2021Jan. 2, 2022
