| Sometimes it takes a prospect longer than some of his peers to develop into an NHL prospect. Diotte is a prime example. The right-shot defenceman was signed as an over-age free agent by the New Jersey Devils. He's best described as a '2-way D' who take a great deal of pride in defending his zone and keeping opponents off the score sheet. He was named the 'Defensive Defenceman' of the year in the QMJHL, after posting a tidy (+55) rating in the regular season. Diotte is a big body (6'3 205lbs) who's a capable skater with slightly above average puck skill, on projection, for the NHL game. His ability to close on opponents and take away time and space with this length is an asset. He also has no issues getting in the lane to block shots at even strength or the penalty-kill. Diotte will need some seasoning in the minors to begin his pro career, but he's a player who recognizes his strengths and limitations. | Allen is a 33 year old veteran goalie who's in the midst of an uneven year overall. He has one more year left on a contract that carries a cap hit of $3.85M Something to be noted : Allen's contract carries a 7 team 'no trade' clause this year - and a 3 team 'no trade next season' Allen's stats aren't stellar. He's clearly lost the net, in the future, in Montreal with Montembault and Primeau positioned to take the reins moving forward. Allen leans #1B / #2A at this stage of his career. | A big body who takes up a ton of net when playing with poise and not wandering outside the posts. Hybrid / Butterfly style. Athletic. Agile. Above average gloves. Good push laterally. Plenty strong and quick enough to move side to side and use his size to his advantage to make desperation stops. Rebound control has ranged at times this season. When the play in front of him is organized, he tends to absorb pucks and find shots through traffic more effectively. Five game segment - from Jan 31st - February 27th - his game road the roller coaster that is the San Jose Sharks in 23/24 .... Faced 161 shots ... Plenty high danger ... | Casey is logging a ton of minutes developing at the University of Michigan and showing positive growth overall. The New Jersey Devils drafted Casey in the 2nd round (46th) in 2022. Through 27GP (in 23/24) he had produced 5G-29A. He is used in all situations - but his primary ice time comes at even strength and PP#1 as the quarterback. His role on the penalty kill is a secondary / clean up role. Casey give up strength and weight in the hard areas but he's a solid defender who relies on his advanced hockey sense and jump to pucks - leading to zone exits. He's sees the ice very well - the kind of player who can escape pressure and survey more than one option before executing a tape to tape outlet. Best described as a 'Transitional / 2-way D'. Leans distributor more than shooter. Skates very well. Agile. Excellent edges. Coveted right shot. | The Canadiens are a rebuilding group who battle through some nights of inconsistent detail defensively. The result is the goaltenders being tasked with more than their share of high danger shots against. Allen's save percentage hovers around .900. His GAA is not sparkling ... but has to be put into context with how the group in front of him plays. Good size. Butterfly. Tracks pretty well from side to side. Has some issues, occasionally, when play works from low to high and pucks are directed on net through traffic. Better than average low net coverage. Sits tall in his butterfly.
