Pittsburgh trade based on Darren Dreger rumour

Created by: Texus
Team: 2017-18 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 20, 2017
Published: Oct. 20, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This one might actually make sense for both teams. It works on the cap for both.

Not sure about including Sprong but I don't see a spot for him in Pitt's lineup any time soon anyways. And I feel Mtl needs to get a forward back in a Galchenyuk deal even if it's not the main piece. Sprong's junior and AHL numbers are also pretty impressive...

Certainly doesn't solve all of Mtl's problems up front but the improvement on the back end could be pretty huge and help the transition game and in turn team offense.

Yeah grin I'm doing a little more reading on Sprong though, I think it's probably way too greedy to include him in this trade unless Mtl adds more lol... But we can dream right?

I do think Galchenyuk for Maatta makes a lot of sense though.

Maatta is currently playing great hockey so I don't think PIT is interested in trading him right now, and in the event of injury, Sprong is probably the first forward called up. I like Galchenyuk but I don't think he can really be a quality center, I see him more of a top 6 winger

I totally agree about Galchenyuk being a winger, but Darren Dreger specifically mentioned his name in connection with Pitt's search for a C so that's pretty much the only reason I did this roster. I was really surprised that was the info Dreger got but it is what it is.

And for Maatta I've seen a lot of Pens fans on here saying he's playing great, but is he really indispensable though? He's still their fifth ranked defenseman in total ice time so far this season, and more importantly 5th by a pretty big margin at 5 on 5... Seems to me like he can be sacrificed to add another potentially very dynamic offensive forward like Galchenyuk.

You're right and the Schultz trade worked out great for them, but they gave up a 3rd because it was a reclamation project. Galchenyuk was skating on the 4th line wing if I'm not mistaken, so his value is very low. Maatta is PITs second best defensemen right now, so his value is high

So true, it's starting to seem very likely the more I think about it. The way Mtl is going defensively too, it might happen sooner than later.

That's true but both players have fairly long track records in the NHL already, I don't think their value can be tied only to how they are playing specifically right now...

Yeah i saw the article so i know exactly what you mean Dreger definitely mentioned PIT, and they've probably looked into it, just like they did previously with Sheahan and Duchene. I just don't know if I want to trade Maatta who's playing well for a center who probably is better suited for the wing and isn't playing so well. If both were playing well then I'd say Maatta for Galchenyuk straight up would be a fair hockey trade, just like Johansen and Jones

Why? Would Montreal be interested in Maatta the guys has missed well over 100 games in the last 4 seasons and has health issues. No way i'd be surrendering Galchenyuk for Maatta that would be a very bad deal for MB.
