Yeah that's far from what Montreal would've offered, good luck Monny!

Voted no for now, but this could really work in the long term. CBJ just need to trade over their ownership for Tkachuk.

Good for him. He was my main target for MTL, but for 5x5M maximum.

Looks about right.

Can't say I like this signing, but honestly don't hate it.

Lindstrom is likely needing development time, and this slots Monahan and Fantilli as a 1C/2C. Sillinger can build his game up as a Plus 3C. Worst case scenario, Monahan can be a solid M6 F.

I can see this deal being good for 2-3 years, assuming Monahan stays healthy. The last two years may be hairy, but the cap will make this contract much more digestible by then.

But honestly, the most underrated effect here? Boone can finally move to the W and play fewer minutes.

RIP CapFriendly ✌️

Monahan Gaudreau reunion. Awesome.

You ain't wrong. Both got five years to go, now. And with as much money committed to Johnny as they have, ain't much to lose to find whatever magic you can, even if it means dipping into familiar territory.

Gonna be interesting to see what Lindholm goes for...

Why does CBJ keep doing these things.

You have a young team, stop slowing them down with old players.

Well, Waddell was wrong and right. Wrong: he said they didn't expect to be active early in FA because... Right: That's when teams make big regrettable mistakes.

They need vets, and I'm fine with Monahan, but this is an overpay with way too much term.

they didn't need this contract. They got so many good young players, it's just looking for excuses not to ice them

26 goals in a 60 pts season for a 29 y.o. who can play in all situations, anywhere in the top 9 and is good on Faceoffs.

Don't clutch yours pearls, BJ's probably needed to add an extra year to attract him in CLB, but nothing outrageous here.

They don't have THAT many. It would be good for the ones they have if they could compete for a playoff spot in january...

I know this day was coming, many moons ago, he almost go traded to Columbus. He has gotten better and starting to see the old Monahan, he has great chemistry with Johnny. Only time will tell.

I had a bad initial reaction to this, but after a day of thought, I actually feel pretty good about it. Obviously there is risk with the injury history, but this is hockey, there is going to injury risk with 100% of players. I forgot how many good years he had in Calgary and he sure did look good last season. If he's healthy this could be a great deal, if he's not, then it will suck, but that can be said about any large contract that has ever been singed.

Well, good on you to put asside your initial reaction and look back at it objectively. BTW, he's the only player with 83 regular season games played, so I would be reassured if I was you.

they have 8 young forwards... 8, most of which are high round draft picks. You add in guys like Boom/Johnny, they are loaded at forward.

Very glad to see Monahan get paid, also glad that it wasn't my team that offered him this amount of term.

Marchenko, Fantilli, Chinakhov, Johnson, Voronkov, Sillinger... that's 6 that need room to play this year and they all fit just fine.

It's better for Fantilli's dev if he's on the second line rather than first, and with Monahan's history with Johnny he can be a good temporary 1C until Fantilli takes that spot.

They traded Texier and are going to be trading Laine so they will be looking to add another bottom 6 forward or two still to fill out their ranks for this season.

dude it's 8, you can keep trying to fudge the numbers, it's 8.
I'm not even counting Laine in there either, if they keep him. I already assumed they move him. There are more forwards than players, this is the last thing they needed.

lol, okay. How am I fudging numbers when I actually listed the 6 young players that will be vying for NHL ice time this year? The Monahan deal doesn't hurt any of them. It actually helps by taking 1C pressure off of a 20-year-old Fantilli.

You can add all the young forwards you want, but that doesn't mean those guys that are going to be, should be, or need to be on the NHL squad this year. Hell, if you want to do that it's more like 11. LDBB, Lindstrom, Malatesta, Dumais, Brindley, could all be on the roster in the next 2-3 years. This year, however, there is 6, so they're fine, and still need to add another veteran or two to the bottom-6. After this year, Kuraly, Danforth, Olivier will be gone, and not all those prospects are going to make it.

You don't get better by playing 18-20 year olds before they are ready. They have to earn their spot. This is the issue CBJ have had in the past - giving young guys spots who haven't done anything to earn it, i.e. Foudy, Bemstrom, Texier...

If you think there are 8, go ahead and list them.

The needed to add a top-6 center, that’s not the issue. It’s just more money and term than is prudent. $4.5m x 3 years would have been perfect.
