Devils would have to retain around 2 million to make the salaries match but that's not a bad idea. Leafs get better on the wing and add 2 mid round picks. Keefe gets his trusted guys.

We don't.

But this move opens up $1.5M this year and next and then $3.6M in two years, clears the Devils of their only "bad" contract, and (most importantly) shuts up leafs fans

we're not looking to make this a salary match. you get the better player for a higher rate, but you get improved picks for it.
