This seems really cheap compared to other examples.
Usually the going price is a 5th

They traded the pick and made the selection?

Edit: Updated to 2026 7th.

Sounds like contract negotiations fell apart.

Which means TOR is likely going to sign him to a very bad contract.

I wanted Tanev to come to Ottawa and I would have offered Dallas a 3rd round pick for his signing rights if necessary.

I couldn't be happier for the Leafs.

Leafs win the trade.

Fair deal. Leafs get the d-man they wanted and the Stars, while it may not be the greatest return but it’s better than just letting Tanev walk for nothing.

If the Leafs sign Tanev to a good deal, this is a rare win-win for both teams.

Doesn’t matter. Until Toronto changes their core, they’ll continue to lose come playoff time.

Can someone explain how you can trade signing rights on a UFA? I thought the U was for unrestricted.

it just gives you a few days of ''exclusivity'' for negotiating before july first.

He's technically not officially a UFA until july 1st. Dallas had his rights until then

It does, however, you don’t become a UFA until July 1st. If you sign a deal with the team that holds your signing rights, you can sign up to an 8-year deal, whereas the longest term you can sign after July 1st is 7 years

This isn't true. In order to sign an 8-year deal, the player had to be on your team at the deadline. Dallas was the only team that could sign Tanev to a 8-year deal.

They could have done a sign-and-trade like Calgary/Florida did with Tkachuk and LA/Winnipeg did with Dubois to give him that 8th year, but since the trade is official, the most they can sign him for is 7 years.

It's advanced negotiating. Goes unrestricted in a few days

As a Leafs fan, I really like tanev today. I am terrified of him declining. He's already the 20th oldest d in the league and I think there are only two d older I'd want for over 2 years (Spurgeon and Doughty). I really hope short term.

To be fair I totally thought his just finished deal with Calgary was going to be regrettable by the end and he kept it going. His style of game usually breaks down the body. Good on him for being so consistent so long

Trading for a players rights doesn't always guarantee a signing with that team. I remember in years past, Tie Domi was traded by the Leafs to Nashville. Leafs ended up signing him anyway lol. And the Rangers traded Mark Messier to the Sharks, and then signed him back in free agency.

Might have given up a pick for nothing. Tanevs ask is probably high for Dallas to move on from him.

Couldn't they double trade him back if they wanted to?
