My believe is, even if the retention salary isn't that much in terms of numbers wise, you're gonna be retaining it for two seasons, and that increases the price for a team to retain it, and I thought, given the weird trade the the Isles did with the blackhawks, I imagine Lou was preparing for something like that

Samberg is better than Chychrun defensively and is paid less, so he's better suited for the 2nd pair.

Chychrun makes too much for the 3rd pair.

Also with only one year left Chychrun isn't worth more now than Ottawa paid for him.

If pager got bought out and hit ufa, he’s signing a 2 yr 3.5m aav deal. Isles aren’t retaining that much unless they it’s worth it. They’re asking for a 2nd and 3rd or a late 1st. The market value for 3Cs on low money contracts was set at the deadline. It would be much smarter for the isles to attach a 2nd and offload the entire contract for future considerations rather than half just to get a late 3rd
