Leafs Offseason

Created by: christianrcleary
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 11, 2024
Published: Jun. 11, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
My hopes for the Leafs offseason, Bertuzzi and Domi both expressed interest in staying, Pesce is someone they need to target if he hits the open market, Marner trade is inevitable if he waives his NMC.

1.
TOR
  1. 2025 4th round pick (NJD)
NJD
  1. Kämpf, David
Additional Details:
Keefe gets his multitool back in exchange for a mid round pick, leafs shed salary for projected 4C
2.
TOR
    Future Considerations
    SJS
    1. Reaves, Ryan
    Additional Details:
SJS gets a mentor and locker room presence for their younger players for a minimal cap hit considering their situation, leafs shed more salary
    3.
    TOR
    1. Kaliyev, Arthur [RFA Rights]
    Additional Details:
Both players are in need of a change of scenery, not being given the chance they deserve on their respective teams
    LAK
    1. Robertson, Nicholas [RFA Rights]
    4.
    TOR
    1. Maggio, Matthew
    2. Pelech, Adam
    3. Wahlstrom, Oliver [RFA Rights]
    4. 2025 1st round pick (NYI)
    5. 2026 4th round pick (NYI)
    Additional Details:
Core needs a shakeup and Marner seems to be the odd one out. Pelech is the type of defensemen that TOR has been looking for, Wahlstrom if used correctly could be a good bottom 6 scoring threat, Maggio immediately becomes a top 5 prospect in Toronto, acquiring a 1st and 4th because futures seem to be a decent priority for Toronto
    NYI
    1. Marner, Mitchell
    Additional Details:
NYI gets one of the best play-driving wingers in the league, Pelech seems expendable because they have Pulock, Dobson, and Mayfield already, Wahlstrom is in need of a change of scenery and a new system to play in, Maggio is a good prospect but will not be as good as marner is, 1st shouldn't hold much value assuming they make the playoffs with this addition

As much as I don't necessarily want Marner cause it'll be extremely hard to actually build a team around him with his cap, at some point you just have to accept the trade based on value alone and figure it out later. This is probably pretty unrealistic cause I don't see him being moved at all, but I would think he would probably get more from some other team who would be more willing to pay him.

awful value for the Leafs IMO - Pelech is best used as your 2nd/3rd best Dman if you're a contender (so like...good, but not a star); Maggio is a project/upside guy at this point; and Wahlstrom is likely a non-tender. If this is all the Leafs would want, from the Isles I'd take the deal and shop Marner elsewhere to get what he's actually worth from someone else.

I do feel like I undervalued Marner a little bit but at this point I feel like he's going to walk as a UFA next summer and getting Pelech on term was important. Isles don't really have many more premium assets to give other than picks and I didn't really want to add too many high picks because that wouldn't be very realistic

Eh, I don't mind the Kaliyev for Robertson swap, but I'd much rather trade Kaliyev 1-for-1 for Wahlstrom.

Pelech is overpaid now and another six years for this 30 year old......no thanks

I don't think he is overpaid at the moment but maybe down the line on that contract but the window to win is now anyways, I do think I sold a bit short on Mitch tho

I think they are equal value so it makes sense, similar players tho so they may meet the same problems on their new teams, more of a fan of Kaliyev on TOR for a scoring punch in the Bottom-6, but I see how NRob could get stuck with low TOI in LA

The best return for one year of Marner is no return. Just having 11m to spend elsewhere like a 5.5m UFA Dman and 5.5, RWer would be fine
Mitch isn't waiving without a contract in hand. No logical team think he worth his 11m (fifth highest in the league) and he'll want a raise too.

The Kings have a severe shortage of both right-handed forwards and wingers with size, which is why I would prefer Wahlstrom. If that doesn't work out, Robertson would be a suitable consolation prize. I'm not that high on him, but I'm not really that high on Kaliyev either, so I suppose it's fair.

Just a note, a good friend of mine coached Pelech and other NHLers in minor hockey. He said Pelech was the best teammate and coachable kid he ever had on in his 30 years of coaching.

I absolutely see your point, but in a way Pelech is that 5.5M defenseman and the 5.5 went to Bert and Kaliyev/Wahlstrom

Would add to the locker room chemistry and feels like he would be a good fit in a Craig Berube system

Still five years of 5.75m for an overpaid player is too much. Heck sign Todd Gill for locker room chemistry for 1m even though isn't a NHLer
I was thinking more along the lines of Walker for four years, and Toffelli for three years.

Yeah I like Walker and Toffoli, I personally would love Stammer to come home for a bit less than he would elsewhere given we shed some cap.
