He's a regular season dynamo, though, and will definitely help Detroit make the playoffs next year.

100% agree, but I'd rather see a meaningful playoff runs in later years rather than first round flameouts. Marner helps the latter, not the former.

The post only makes sense if it show the Red Wing roster. Wings have Raymond, Seider and others to sign. Taking on an additional 5m in may not be the Wings plans or fit into their cap.

We could make it work but that means not being able to improve in other areas which means our team wouldn't actually be better.

We probably wouldn't make the playoffs next year though. We would need to find a 2C, again. Without making any corresponding trades, we would have roughly 3M in cap space with an open fourth line RW spot and still needing two scratches. So basically no cap space. Copp would be our 2C, Kasper our 3C. We wouldn't be able to upgrade our defense which means Chiarot at 2RD. Fabbri would also be our second line LW. Just a whole lot of not ideal situations for this team. Not saying it can't happen but this team wouldn't be any better, if not I would say it's actually worse.

I did do up the team and see. There would have to be a bunch of other moves made to try and make improvements and that would still leave us without a 2C. I honestly don't see it working right now for us. I know it's easy to say well just make this and this trade but that's always easier said on here than done in real life.

@buffbry @palhal my write up on how the team would look.

Debrincat - Larkin - Marner (unreal top line)
Fabbri - Copp - Raymond
Rasmussen - Kasper - Berggren
Mazur - Veleno - Fischer

Walman - Seider
Edvinsson - Chiarot
Maatta/ Johansson - Petry

Let's be realistic Marner isn't taking a pay cut after putting up 97points, 99 points and 85 points in his last 3 seasons

Detroit has about $29M in cap space and that will be cut in half after signing Raymond and Seider. So, about $14.5M is left then subtract Marner's $10.8M cap hit and that leaves Detroit $3.7M to sign 7 players.

Detroit isn't trading ASP and if they move a center, it's much more likely that they move Copp before Compher.

So, Marner to Detroit isn't going to happen.

Marner isn’t waiving for Detroit.
Leafs aren’t trading him in division.
I’m a huge fan of Marner’s, and he would benefit any team, but I don’t see how he is a difference maker for the Wings - doesn’t look like a fit to me

We almost made the playoffs with Holl, Chiarot, Maatta and Petry. That's quite an accomplishment considering most of CapFriendly thinks they are the 4 worst dmen in the league.

Fabbri and Maatta can be traded. They both have 1 year left, and are useful players. The Sharks and Hawks can use them. That's an extra 7 million to spend in free agency.

Yes I get that as I stated. 7M to fill two roster spots is also not the most ideal. Maybe Joshua at 3M and Carrier at 4M but that's stretching it thin for those guys.

The thing that gets exponentially harder when you have an 11 million dollar+ passenger eating up top minutes.

The red wings have yet to make the playoffs in his career

Marty Brodeur had the most wins of any goalie, must mean he's the best goalie, right?
Check Marner's playoff game splits. Massive dropoff in production after Game 4, every year like clockwork.
Now watch him play. Guy won't take a hit to make a play. Won't go anywhere near the boards for a battle. When the tough gets going, Marner's already gone. Won't elevate his play, won't help his team win. Not worth the cap space.

And the Wings almost did that without Marner. No need to tie up so much cap getting to the playoffs when he won't help in it. Spend the money elsewhere and fix the defense, or get more reliable goaltending.

Also factor in that we would now have 3 rookies in the line up. Kasper who is close to ready but not quite there yet. Mazur and Edvinsson likely ready. Still have Copp as 2C, a place he should not be at all. Like I said, it's not impossible, it's just very difficult and this team is worse this year than last.
