NSH-VAN deal to make the Preds Cup favorites

Created by: alwaysnextyear
Team: 2017-18 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 28, 2017
Published: Jul. 28, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Canucks continue their rebuild efforts by sending their best Dman and a 3rd round pick to the Preds in exchange for a 1st, local D prospect Fabbro, and the brother of recent Canucks' 1st round pick Elias Pettersson (although Emil looks doubtful as an NHLer).

This deal would give the Preds, who already had the best D in the league, 3 ridiculously good pairings to line up against any talent in the league. Tanev has a good value contract for 3 more years and the Preds will still have enough cap space left to bring Fisher back for one more year.

NSH says no in my opinion ... the last thing they need is D.

That's such a lopsided trade. Fabbro has as much value as Tanev, then NSH gives another 1st on top, paying someone 4.5M to play on the third pair? No way that happens

That's the point though. They don't NEED more D but adding Tanev would mean they could put any pairing out against any line they wanted. The trade is about going from great to dominant and winning a Cup.

All of their Dmen after Subban, including Tanev, would be on great value contracts, and they can roll the 3 pairs at will instead of the traditional method of having questionable talent on the 3rd pairing and limiting their minutes. Fabbro is a good young prospect, but there's no chance he's equal value to Tanev right now, which is why I added the pick swap of a 1st for a 3rd. The picks could be changed, but Van would still want more than just Fabbro coming back.

I think the hardest part with trading D this year, is the darn Vegas Golden Knights have a plethora of them and will sell them cheap. While most aren't as good as Tanev (the couple that are Vegas will keep), they'd fill a teams needs on a third pairing, so teams like Nashville, Anaheim, Calgary etc who have solid top 4/5 in place won't be in the market.

I think New Jersey would be the perfect trading partner for Vancouver. They're making a splash this year, as they grabbed Marcus Johansson and Brian Boyle on forward, plus Hall has said he thinks they're not done - but their D is not so good and was a huge weakness last year - on the right side they have Damon Severson who's developing into a #1 RD..... then they have Ben Lovejoy and Dalton Prout...Tanev is an easy fit there.
