A Tame Leafs Off-Season

Created by: miniwhoasked

Description
Given how many wild Marner trade proposals there have been on here, I wanted to put out a more tame, realistic view of what the Leafs' offseason could look like.

This proposal hinges on two things -- is Easton Cowan ready to be an NHLer, and is John Tavares willing to waive his NMC? It may be early to bring up Cowan, but what's the point of signing somebody to an ELC just to burn a year in the minors? If he isn't ready, keeping Robertson with the $1.4mil remaining is definitely possible. I elaborate on Tavares' situation in the trade proposal, but this works just as well with him as the 2C instead of Roslovic. The motive behind trading Tavares is simply a culture shakeup.

Other notes:
Liljegren's contract is based on the one Zach Whitecloud got from the Knights. Similar players, imo.
Domi likely wants term and not money, but I still gave him a raise, which I expect to happen across the league due to the cap increase.
I don't know how realistic the Montour or Stolarz contracts are, but they seem fair enough. I could see Montour asking for more term, though, given he's the same age as Rielly.
Like Bertuzzi last year, Roslovic comes to Toronto to bet on himself and get PAID if he succeeds.

Additional Details:
If Tavares even agrees to waive his NMC, I believe he'll want to go to a team that's both a rival to the Leafs AND a playoff team. The Bruins and Lightning both fit that bill, but I don't see the Bruins dealing for a centre with Poitras healthy next season.

Tavares talked about wanting an extension, so I would assume that he won't be willing to waive his NMC.

It would likely take 6.5M+ to land Montour but more than likely 7M+ especially for the Leafs. Don't think he will be selecting them but who knows. Also, trading Robertson for a 5th isn't a realistic move when he's worth at least a 3rd and when you consider that they've been trying to build up his value. If he can't be dealt in a package for an upgrade on the backend, then maybe he would be dealt for someone like Kaliyev + a 3rd or 4th.

Tampa Bay doesn't need a C. And they can't afford JT, even with 50% retention.

You crazy if you think Robertson gets you Kaliyev and a 3rd Snoop says he wants his stash back.

Not really, unless someone wants to trade a 2nd or a change of scenery candidate (like Robertson) for him straight up. Blake called him out publicly even though he hasn't had much opportunity to play. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't get tendered a qualifying offer.

The two have similar production at the NHL level career-wise except that Robertson's production has gone up, while Kaliyev's has gone down. Kaliyev does have a large sample size of being as (or more) effective as Robertson. So, if LA has interest in Robertson then Kaliyev + a 3rd isn't farfetched if they don't, then Kaliyev + a 4th or 1 for 1.

my bad i'm tripping, but i think the point still stands that if JT decides to waive he will want to middle finger the leafs by going to a rival

At 75% there would probably be at least a few. Maybe San Jose? Utah? Colorado? The real issue seems to be Jt waiving his NMC. His comments from his end of season interview sure make it sound like he isn't open to a trade.

I almost put Colorado down with some idea of "if Landeskog has another setback" but I read some reports and he seems ready to go. I feel like JT would be willing to waive his no-move to go to a cup contender, cause he's not getting any younger
