Keeping Marner v1

Created by: McJoe7
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 8, 2024
Published: May 8, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I wanted to try a version where they keep Marner and continue to upgrade around the edges because the definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over and as Leaf fans, we are indeed insane! Mitch Marner has played at a 90+ point pace every year since 2018. He's top 10 in the league in scoring in that span. 4 forwards have played more ice time per game than him over that span and the ONLY forward who has over a point per game and kills more penalties than him per game is Mika Zibanejad. Marner is inarguably a top 20 regular season forward in the league despite being atrocious in the playoffs outside of the Tampa series last year.

And its been reported that the Leafs said they won't do this 4 players over 11 million thing, but this is the only year they have to do it. Marner and Tavares are both expiring and Tavares will either take a sweetheart deal next season or they'll let him walk and then we will have to see about Marner.

In this version, I'm just hoping Minten and Cowan make the team, they should probably be getting another center. Even if its another version of Domi who can play the wing and can play center, but they need another option so that they can have more flexibility in their lineup. It's a very young forward group that can be put together in a lot of different ways but the D is massively upgraded, especially offensively. They will be leaning in to the strength of their forwards and have more depth of scoring up front and on the back end and not so many guys who just flat out can't score.

Liljegren is maybe worth only one 2nd. Probably more like a 3rd.

Chicago's not paying that for a bottom six guy. Try Pittsburgh, I hear their GM is gullible enough to make a stupid trade like this.

this coming from a team who's GM took on Taylor Halls cap dump for 2 AHLers.
Tell me hows it feel to take on 6x2 for nothing and cost the team 12.5 mil in real money?

Talk about a gullible

That was a swipe at Dubas, not the Penguins in general. Toronto fans keep trying to pawn Dubas's mistakes off on Chicago. As for the Hall trade, there was more to it than just what you observed. They were buying additional time to sell Foligno on joining a rebuilding team.

Like 90% of people on here trying to dump their mistakes on everyone else man.
Justify it however you want, they took on an oft injured, slow as hell 12 mil cap dump from BOS.
Believe me if he was still worth a damn, BOS wouldn't have moved him.

I can agree Hall isn't worth much but the investment in Bedard was well worth it. They got a former 1st overall draft pick to walk Bedard through the expectations and ups and downs of having that weight on your shoulders and they got a mentor/role model in Foligno. All it cost was cash/cap and a few prospects that didn't fit with the team structure. There was a need and Davidson filled it without sacrificing anything.

Plus I could point to dozens of ACGMS here that have offered positive value in return for him. His value has depreciated but there still is some value there.

I would hardly call Hall a good mentor.
I don't think he had much to do with Foligno coming. It's not like they are buddy buddy.
Foligno came because they over paid him when no one else would. I don't blame him. I'm sure he likes having the post season off as well with his kid being sick.

You are free to call him whatever you want. The fact is that the trade was Mitchell (undersized defenseman) and Regula for Hall and rights to negotiate with Foligno. Chances were that Mitchell wasn't getting QO'd and Regula was going to be a tweener. Neither had value or they would have been traded for a better return. Hall was a cap dump and the price Chicago requested was the ability to negotiate with Foligno. Love the trade or not, it made sense. Teams have traded upwards of a 3rd round pick for that, so you could consider the trade essentially Hall + 3rd round pick for FC and Regula/Mitchell as waiver claims since that's essentially what they would have been if they were qualified. It made sense. This trade doesn't.
