Why a NMC makes a move difficult

Created by: RoyBoy
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 6, 2024
Published: May 6, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Even though the core 4 is rumored to be splitting up after the latest Maple Leafs playoff loss, all 4 guys have a NMC, which will complicate a trade. However, I think moving at least one of those guys should be possible. I do think Marner will be the easiest one to deal, but is it super likely with the comments he made about wanting to stay? Not sure. But I’ll try to come up with a realistic deal, as there have been many Leafs ACGMs with the core 4 staying together

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Kurashev, Philipp ($1,125,000 retained)
  2. Murphy, Connor
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (LAK)
  4. 2025 1st round pick (TOR)
CHI
  1. Liljegren, Timothy [RFA Rights]
  2. Marner, Mitchell
Additional Details:
Marner signs an 8-year extension with Chicago. I feel like the Blackhawks wouldn’t pass up on this opportunity to give Bedard an elite winger. Sure, Murphy is a good shutdown defender, but could be replaced by a guy like DeMelo in free agency or any other RHD. And Kurashev is a tough guy to trade, but it protects some of their other prospects like Nazar. The picks are to even value, and Liljegren is sent for a better opportunity in Chicago
2.
TOR
  1. Carcone, Michael
Additional Details:
Carcone is a great value contract, and can be a huge asset to the Maple Leafs. A lot of his value in this deal is his cheap cap hit for his decent production
ARI
  1. Robertson, Nicholas [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Robertson gets a fresh change of scenery with a team that can provide him with the opportunity
3.
TOR
  1. 2025 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Moving a player I feel is obsolete for Toronto, and it clears cap space. Treliving doesn’t need to give up a lot to shed his contract, so he does it
ANA
  1. Kämpf, David
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (LAK)

Or chicago just waits a season and signs marner as a ufa. He's already made it clear that he wants to get paid so there's no benefit to trading for him now.

Take Murphy out and I think the Hawks say yes. Losing Kurashev sucks, and the picks, but guaranteeing locking down Marner is worth it. I could see us giving a LHD though, probably Kaiser.

Last thing the hawks need is marner coming in and signing a ridiculous extension just for Bedard to rightfully ask for a bigger payday than marner. Let somebody else overpay marner and let chicago keep their cap situation under control. Learn from Toronto"s mistakes. Don't recreate them.

Not to be a Dubas defender, but Toronto's current cap crunch is because of an unprecedented global pandemic that led to the flat cap era. By all rights, the cap should start rising year-over-year again, meaning Bedard's ask will be less % of the cap in the future.

HUGE overpay for 1 year of Marner for a rebuilding team to give up which is why the Hawks say no. The ONLY reason Chicago considers Marner is if the price they pay now, is a fair amount less than what they receive at the TDL with 50% retained. A 1st and Murphy and Chicago would need to get back at least (2) 1sts at the TDL for it to make sense. Otherwise, Chicago waits until Marner is a free agent to consider and gives up nothing.

It really isn't worth it. The obsession with moving Jones and/or acquiring Marner is short sighted and ill advised. Even if these rumors gain traction and it does happen for some reason, NO ONE should be advocating for this to happen. If you want to know why, many CHI fans and I have written about it here on cap friendly too many times to count already. You can go look through the comments section of any ACGM involving TOR, CHI, Marner, or Jones and just do a little reading and use some critical thinking.

Taking out Murphy and adding Kaiser makes the deal even worse for Chicago. Murphy isn't part of the long term plan in Chicago. Kaiser has a good chance to be.
