Description
- Keefe replaced with Berube
- Shanahan fired
- Rationale for Marner trade: VGK will not want to pay Hanifin, Pietrangelo, and Theodore $7M or more. The Leafs get a quality, mobile RD and VGK can replace the offense of Marchessault, Stephenson, and Mantha (who could all be moving on). VGK has a track record of being aggressive and cutting players loose (even veteran guys - just look at the Reilly Smith deal)
- Tavares coming off the books the following season creates further cap flexibility

Absolutely agree - there is a ton of risk. But this team needs a big shakeup and a new identity.

The team can have a new identity if necessary in summer of 2025, when Tavares and Marner aren't resigned.
Theodore will be 31 when his new contract starts and to offer him seven years obscene.
Kampf doesn't waive to SJ. It's an impractical roster going with six NHL Dmen.

I think the Theodore deal is a fine way to go and would have to live with the extension.
I don’t think using the rest of the cap space on multi year deals is the best strategy. Should leave flexibility to see who hits the market in 25 and 26 just in case we can get in on that.
Mcdavid might be a dream but any smart team should be setting themselves up to pitch him even if it’s only a 5% chance he comes.
