Your logic is totally wrong. Teams don't have to trade to get franchise pieces. Use cap to sign premier UFAs when Tavares and Marner leave as UFAs. There are certainly no franchise players in these trades.
Sanheim and Couturier are not good value at 10.5m long term.
20 man roster aren't practical and not having a 7th NHL Dman is less than awful.

I don't think a team has ever even came close to retaining $21 million dollars in total contract value on a trade before

By definition, a "franchise player" cannot be a rental because a rental cannot have any prospective value to the franchise.

Philadelphia could acquire a "franchise player" for free simply by signing Sam Reinhart for 5 seasons or more at Marner's $11 million.

Last time I checked a "franchise player" doesn't avoid puck battles because they're too scared to get a little bruised.
