The biggest value Marner has is his marketing appeal. Guys like us might hate him but any Leafs fan knows that most kids and women have his jerseys. He is attractive to casual fans and that is exactly what Utah needs from a business perspective.

From a hockey perspective, they need top end talent and bring able to acquire Marner without moving Cooley is a massive win.

Geekie is the main piece for Toronto and arguably an expendable one for Utah with Cooley as their future 1C.

Why would Marner waive for Utah

To get away from the pressure in Toronto and get to be the face of a team whose fans will love him.

Like Zegras he'd be a star playing in the US where you only saw his highlights.

Neither piece from Toronto is worth Winnipeg putting up Montreal's 2nd.

I feel like Marner's value is not that high right now but lets see, this one will be debated for the days to come.

For me a 1st and 2cds from Utah would be a coup for the Leafs.

I love how you trade for EK like he has no value and the pencil them in your 1RD spot

There will be no retention and if you want EK it will be 1st and Minten.
Other teams players have value too.... even before they play for the leafs.

What "Utah needs from a business perspective" is star power that will be on the roster after July 1, 2025. The front-office personnel that are in place now are highly likely to educate the new owners about the dangers of making near-sighted short-term moves. Acquiring Marner just to make an immediate splash is exactly that sort of error. Utah can get just as much buzz from signing a big-ticket free agent (like Jake Guentzel or Sam Reinhart) to a long-term deal (say 6 or 7 seasons) for $10 million as they will from acquiring Marner, and if it doesn't work out, at least all that they will have lost is money.
