Description

Leafs have no choice but to run it back with the core 4 as they all have NMC's and nobody is going to give up big assets for Marner or Tavares with 1 year left on the contract.

This off-season they spend their UFA dollars on big defensemen Myers and Hakpanna while going for budget friendly offensive weapon like Daniel Sprong. Laurent Brossoit makes sense as the 1B goaltender as he brings experience behind Woll, while being a cheaper option than Talbot, Nedelijkovic, and Stolarz and is coming off a good season.

With this lineup lacking a little bit on the wing, they save their cap space to make a big move at the deadline as this is the last year they likely have Tavares and possibly Marner.

There will be changes to the team, likely big ones. NMC ‘a aren’t impossible to work with, it takes a man to man conversation with the player but generally when a player realizes that they aren’t wanted on a team it’s pretty easy to make a deal work. 1 of the core 4 is likely gone, all signs point to Marner. I’d be shocked if they “ran it back”. 9 years and no results is a whole other level of insanity.

Changes are coming barring a cup finals appearance.

I’ve never said Marner is there to stay. I’ve said the trades that are posted on here for him are dumb, but never once said he wouldn’t waive - I’ve been on the other side saying I think it’s best for his own career to move on.

Like I just made a Marner trade to Nashville for Saros bc its quiet but underrated team with everyone thinking they had no shot making the playoffs but they only do that if Askrov is ready. Marner to Nashville isn’t a bad idea, but that deal likely doesn’t happen for various reasons.

1. Preds need centres more than wingers
2. Saros has not been good this year and likely asks for too much on a contract due to his previous seasons
3. Saros isn’t the type of goalie Treliving likes - he only likes bigger goalies. Anything shorter than 6’2” isn’t a guy he likes so I can’t see him trading for one under 6’
