Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Cozens, Dylan
  2. 2025 2nd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Before you come at my head, just read the though process. It is wishful thinking.

While Cozens is a fantastic player, he will be a 7M 2C, while also having multiple other Cs in the system looking to take his spot. The Sabres are loaded with Top 6 caliber players, but no truly elite playmaker. Marner fits with Thompson and possibly Peterka on that first line, and it opens up the second line to guys like Ohgren, Savoie, or a new C at the draft or FA.

Cozens has some grizzle to his game, and would end up being the heir apparent to John Tavares as the teams 2C.
BUF
  1. Marner, Mitchell
Additional Details:
Assume Extension.
2.
TOR
  1. Markström, Jacob ($1,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
I initially had Binnington who is younger and has gone on deeper runs, but I settled on Markstrom due to term. You typically know what you will get from Markstrom, he can steal you games. It also opens the door for Dustin Wolf to be that guy.
CGY
  1. Dewar, Connor [RFA Rights]
  2. Liljegren, Timothy [RFA Rights]
  3. 2026 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
I hate to make this move, I love Liljegren, but I think the leafs are going to become wary of him. He is almost 25 and has not really become as advertised. The team may grow impatient as they begin to try and make a bunch of changes. He could hold tremendous value for Calgary, as he stop gaps for Brzustewicz, and helps in the event that Andresson leaves in 2 years.

Dewar is a strong depth piece that will give the team energy. Helps add some size to the usually gritty Flames bottom 6.

Cozens is the guy you don’t trade to a division rival

That was legitimately my only worry. Buffalo looks like the right fit for Marner, but it is tricky with divisional rivals. They are typically really petty. But the fit is there for both sides.

Hearing adams talk, sounds like he expects cozens role to grow, like he's expecting him to be an all situations center, that's gonna be good at multiple things. Not a guy you give up for marner.

If the Sabres had any interest in moving Cozens, they wouldn’t have traded Mittelstadt. Moving Cozens would give the Sabres the worst center group in the league unless they signed Lindholm. We’d have Thompson, no 2C, Krebs at 3C (who I don’t like even as a 4C) and no 4C. Maybe Savoie and Ostlund could come in and play, but I view Savoie as a winger in the NHL and I certainly am not putting a rookie in as important of a role as 2C.
