Revamping the core is not as easy as we think

Description
Reality is, the FA replacements for Marner are slim if none at all. Signing free agents often lead to overpays IE Bertuzzi versus his production, Klingberg etc... trading Marner involves two things him accepting a trade and Toronto being able to replace him with a 60-80 point top 6 player at a minimum and a true top 4 four forward. Reality is Marner had 14 points in 11 games in last year's playoffs. This year he is still obviously hampered by the ankle injury. Marner is a top top 3 winger capable of 90-100 points +. Trading him removes that obviously highly good offensive production. This odds of a trade slim, most signs point to him wanting to resign and the Leafs putting a hard cap on him of about 12-12.5 million and no more than that. Same as Tavares at about 3-6 million depending on the reports. The real changes needed that can maybe jumpstart this core is a sweep of coaching staff and Tavares relinquishing his captaincy.
Reason for kahkonen, after the San Jose trade with a better new jersey defense. His stats .923 save% and 2.52 GAA.

Jay Rosehill said he would rather have 12 Ryan Reaves than to have 1 Mitch Marner. Thoughts?

Mitch Marner needs to stop being compared to Brad Marchand and Doug Gilmour. They are all different players. We need to focus on reality. He is an elite offensive talent period. My thoughts on Marner are the same as they are on Nylander. Two offensive talents that be be very underrated defensively. Marner is a former selke finalist proving he can provide that 200 foot game. Obviously our core has not done much and as a result I agree to potentially trade them. The problem is we need a value that helps us. If we trade Marner that is around 95 points in a full 82 season. We can't expect Robertson to all of sudden jump to a 70 point guy. Thus we need a top 6 six forward as replacement and the whole point of the trade is to improve the defense which then means a top four defender. Judging by the reports on Nylander was Leafs asked for a top four Blueline for him. All teams wanted to offer was a 1st round pick, a prospect and middle type forward NHLer on a salary to somewhat match.
A truly good team like Vegas, Colorado etc has MacKinnon Rantanen and then players like Duhaime mackdermid, etc... it's a balance and so far the Leafs have failed that balance.

Liljegren when healthy is a good top four. The problem this year is his injuries and not sure why but it takes him awhile after injuries to get back up too speed. They are many players like him and right now he is struggling after his second injury. He is still young and an RFA. If trading can get an equivalent defender back I am all for it. I don't agree with underselling him when due to his age we can sign him to a 2.5 to 3 million deal and if he falters we can send him down to the AHL.

Hawks aren't making that trade. Jarnkrok isn't worth a 2nd to the Hawks. And Kampf is a negative value player from the Hawks perspective. Easy decline for the Hawks. Leafs are the team paying up if they want that $4m in cap space.

There is no world where the Hawks pay a 2nd for those players. Both are camp dumps. And Kampf signed way too long.
