Why not? It's basically a 60 point 2nd line center for free.

I don't see the Leafs getting fair value in any Marner trade at this point.

because no one pays 60 pt players 11 million especially at 34 when they are slowing.
How nice of you to think other teams can't find better ways to spend 11 mil in cap space.

That's what people on CF have convinced you.

Look at the centers in free agency. Who available will sign for Buffalo that's better than JT? No one. If Buffalo has the cap this trade makes sense for them. If JT fits he can sign a cheap extension. It's close to home so he doesn't have to uproot his family, and Buffalo can be a competitive team as soon as next year.

No one is taking an 11M 60pt declining 34 year old center. No one.
retain 50% at the very least if you want to move that, or expect to pay to move that kind of cap space.
    It's not all about TOR.

Gonna have to add some bodies to that Flames trade especially with max retention on Markstrom.

You'll be surprised. With the cap going up some teams will want to reach the floor. Leafs can trade JT to Utah, they can retain half, and trade him to Buffalo. Leafs can give Utah a 3rd.

you think Utah is going to retain 50% for a 3rd? no they aren't.
Even if it was after July 1st and TOR paid him. They aren't doing that. That much cap is returning a 1st at the least.

Leafs will be doing them a favour by helping them reach the cap floor so the cost won't be as much as it would in season.

yeah how nice of you to do them this "favor"....
they don't need no favors to get to cap floor.

no actually no team will. There isn't a single team in the league that needs "help" to get to the cap floor.
Every team has that. Even SJS can get to the cap floor and they got more cap space than anyone else.
Some mythical arguments you are running where everyone just takes 11 mil in cap from you for nothing. just because......
If you want teams to take 11 mil in cap space from you, you better be willing to pay. If not, prepare to retain like 50% on that because no one want a declining 34 year old 60 pt player on an 11 mil contract.
You sure as hell know that the leafs wouldn't take a contract like that, so why pretend everyone else should.

i mean nyr would have to say yes to this. imo getting trouba off the team is already an improvement and goodrow is somewhat replaceable. worst comes to worst they could just deal marner with retention and prob recoup the 1st plus an asset. assuming the NMC is waived

two cap dumps and a late first for a 90+pt player, NYR would be absolutely braindead to say no. regardless of trouba's nmc

that first nearly covers the cost to dump ONE of those guys

If we need their cap, we simply retain 1m on them for a decent return. Two important beasts for an 11m egg carton. Obvious pass.

Who's paying 7m for Trouba? Dude has played all season below replacement level and is barely worth 1m. Some shmuck team might take Goodrow haf retained but he's even worse. PLethora of league min guys can play 4th line minutes with horrific metrics.
