Definitely interesting, I would rather go after Trenin or Joshua then bring back Girgensons though. Girgensons Breeds Losing

Do you think Colorado can afford rantanens extension?

How many teams can afford him?

How many teams can afford him while also having assets like a top 10 pick AND a prospect of Kulichs caliber, and Johnson who slots into your defense immediately on an ELC AND whose cap back to you is a 30 goal scorer?

If buffalo wins a round you get another 1st too

I obviously make assumptions here, but when I ask those questions no one answers.

I can answer those questions right now:

1) Yes, easily. He's up in 2025, at which point they will have approximately $34m in cap space (if they don't sign anyone from today until then). So if the GM isn't a complete moron, he will plan all of his signings appropriately to ensure he can afford the extension when the time comes.
2) That is irrelevant from the Avs' perspective when they're considering of the value of the return. It only becomes relevant if they want to trade Rantanen and create a bidding war, but they definitely don't want to do that.
3) See 2. Also, a #6D and a $7.5m 31 year old winger (32 next month) who averaged a 68 point pace over the last 3 years and is locked up for another 3 years after this one has very low trade value, if any at all. The only high-end assets are Kulich and 9OA, but you're offering 4 quarters for a dollar in a sense.

I mean, capfriendly.com has them with 28.6 million and only 10 players signed

Feels like this team is going to have a terrible time affording extensions for Benson, Quinn, Peterka down the line. Power might have to be moved. Also a better 3C would be nice. Interesting idea though

Ryan Johnson is a 3rd pair dman because he's a rookie behind Power, Byram, Dahlin, and Samuelsson. He forced his way into the NHL his first pro year. Trying to discount his talent and value by calling him a 6 d is absurd. He may play on the 3rd pair, but his talent is far beyond that, and he's on an elc

It's very obviously paltry and they can afford him easily. Neither Sakic or CMac are morons and are perfectly capable of planning how to work the cap.

Not many teams would want to pay 3 players 12 million plus

Not many teams have players that are worth paying 12 million plus. You have those kinds of players you have to pay them. Simple as.
