I was so crushed when Sandin was traded to the Caps, he was my favourite prospect to follow for years and was a ton of fun with the Leafs. I'll never forget the giant reverse hit he threw on Blake Wheeler.

This is a fantastic deal for the Caps, Sandin has the potential to be something so special and the Caps just bought up moat of his prime years for less than 5m. Such a good contract

Good deal, Sandin is a solid 2nd pair D with slightly more upside

Loved him with the Leafs, hope he finds success in WSH

Edit: surprised he didn’t have any kind of NTC or M-NTC on this deal

Really didn't have a ton of room for the guy, and we ended up getting Easton Cowan out of the trade so I'm not going to complain too much

Some people are saying it's too much but I beg to differ. I think it's perfect for what he brings.

The Leafs were crazy to trade Sandin in the first place. They complain how they don't have defence and then trade a 23 y/o top 4 D for 20 games of Erik Gustafsson and Easton Cowan (who does look great, hope he works out).

This is around what guys like Savard, Gardiner, Pettersson received. I'd say it's pretty good value for someone whose been playing on their first pairing.

This is a great deal. 5 years takes him to 29 I believe. He still has an opportunity to secure one more big contract at that time, but it also gives the caps Sandin's prime at 'second pair defenseman' money when he realistically could turn into a top pair guy in that time frame. Depending on how this retool goes, the caps can also ship him out at the deadline in the last year of that deal and get a haul, or they hold him and continue being competitive. Lots of flexibility. GMBM cookin'

This can age really well. Good for Sandin! I’d say there was a possibility that he could sign in the mid 3s but this is still alright.

He's regressed a little from last season with a minor drop in both his points and his on-ice goal differential. It's not a serious issue, but at his age, he should be producing more each year.

A LOT of people here are saying this will age well, but it needs to age well, because if he were being paid this much this season it would be too much. If he regresses again, then this contract will look really bad.

On the other hand, the cap is going up and there will be a ton of very silly contracts handed out, so this likely won't be the worst of them.

His points have regressed from last year only because he was on PP1 with Carlson out last year. Carlson has been PP1 the entire season this year

We're complaining about the other side... Our lefties contain: Rielly, McCabe, Brodie, Benoit, Gio, Lagesson, Lajoie, Riafali whereas our right contains: Lilly, Libby (A week ago it was just Lilly)

Fair price for an RFA. People give a lot of credit to GMs for deals like these but it's pretty hard to overpay an RFA. The real challenge is getting bargains in UFA

Leafs were fortunate that they got such a good prospect in Cowan at pick 29

I just questioned the Leafs in trading a first and second for McCabe and then getting just a first for Sandin..
Apparently Sandin was so pissed at the Leafs for only paying 1.4m x 2 years in his RFA, he probably wanted to be traded or would never have signed long term with the Leafs.

Solid signing. Assuming they paid 3M for the 2 RFA years they paid about 5.5M for the 3 UFA years.

Maybe this is why they let him go. They knew he was going to be worth this much and didn’t want to pay it. Better to save the cap space for your stars than spend it on your supporting cast.

And a later pick too, since it was Boston’s pick that they got for Orlov. I thought they should have insisted on Washington’s own pick, even if it meant letting them keep Gustafsson. I didn’t expect Washington to drop as low in the standings as they did after the trade, but they could have protected it.

Anyway, they also got Lafferty in that trade, who had value until they decided they could no longer afford him, and multiple years of retention on McCabe, which makes him worth more than his cap hit.

That’s possible. Some players don’t like to air their beefs publicly. Their other deadline deals gave them a surplus of defensemen going into the playoffs, so it would have been a good time to get value for him if they knew he wanted out.
