Trenin's value aside, NSH doesn't use up their final retention spot for that return.

My proposals have all been centered around a 3rd for Trenin, just wondering if I'm in the right area on that?

Just swap what you've offered with something interesting to Nashville then yes, it would be a realistic deadline.

Would have to give up something of real substance. Not saying it will take a ton, but maybe Merkulov for Treinen+4th. Or Treinen straight up for a 3rdish

Unless they plan to use that spot to be a middle man for a deal, I don't think it being their last slot matter. That retention would only be for the rest of this season and then the spot freed up again for next year.

Trenin's displayed an extra gear come playoff time before, and GMs often overpay for physical players like him at the deadline (ie: Jeannot), so I could see him getting a 3rd+ a B prospect or a late round pick. Maybe even a 2nd, if there's a bit of a bidding war for him.

If NSH is selling, that retention spot is more likely to be needed to move a guy like Barrie, instead of someone on a cheap contract like Trenin.

Even without retention, a 5th and a minor leaguer isn't going to get a deal done for Trenin. Plenty of teams would outbid this offer.

The plan would probably be to use the slot on a dman like Barrie, Carrier, or Fabbro, who all have bigger cap hits and would have a much higher value retained. Trenin's cap is less than 2 mil and his remaining cap hit for teams not on LTIR is around 500k. If you need retention on one player who is making that little it's probably better to shed some money in this deal by dumping a contract than retain

Probably. GM's love to overvalue defensive grinders so there's hope somebody would overpay for him
