This trade seems fair.
Guentzel to the Red Wings makes a lot sense.

That really isn’t enough to get Jake with no retention. Easy pass.

When's the last time a team's top prospect was dealt for a rental? If we're talking a sign and trade then MAYBE we talk Kasper, but at that point I don't think there would be a deal.

Name the last player as statistically good as Jake Guentzel who was traded?
I have a list that are worse in case you were going to say them:
Horvat, Kane, Tarasenko, St. Louis, Hossa, Giroux
(Though some of those guys are close to Guentzel)
Anyone else?

Not really. He won't be traded. He will sign a 9MM, 8yr extension. Then in 3-4 years the Pens will eat half and trade him for a haul. Who wouldn't want a 33yo 30+ goal scorer getting paid 4.5MM when the cap is 95MM+ (equivalent to 3.5MM in today's cap).

Yzerman isn't trading Bergy and a 1st for a rental.

Red Wings have good forward depth.

They'll be even better when Kane returns from injury.

Detroit needs a legit top 4 defenseman like Hanifin or Chychrun.

Edvinsson isn't quite ready for that role.

I'll be surprised if Guentzel is traded.

Actually it doesn't.

Detroit isn't paying that for a rental.

Even if they they wanted to sign Guentzel to a contract extension they can't afford it.

Seider and Raymond need big raises this summer as RFA's.

But I do like the idea.

If we trade him no matter what we will be disappointed, but the argument still stands. Guys who average 35 - 40 goals per season and a PPG don't become available often. Especially guys who produce big time in the playoffs.
