why spend all of those assets when the Habs dont need cap and if they did, they could just buy him out

Gallagher likely has San Jose on his NTC/NMC list. Montreal is not going to retain on Gallagher and likely aren't interested in moving him at all (as they don't need the cap space). If they were to move him AND retain, they certainly wouldn't give all that up. For the same reason San Jose wouldn't trade 2 3rds, PIT's 1st, Mukhamadullin and Vlasic (2 mil retained) to Montreal for a Kunin-like player.
